Why does spring recoil destroy good centerfire scopes?

Do all type of airguns have the ability to ruin a good scope? Why are springers able to do it? Just curious. I've never spent so much time looking into 'kid stuff' as I have in the last week. I'm a gun-a-holic though and have caught the learning bug for air guns. My two boys and I have started our own competitions. I never knew AG's could be so interesting. Fun, I already new about!

I believe it is only the springer types that are so hard on scopes, they have a nasty double recoil, first forward then rearward.

I thought it was the other way around.  First backward, once the tension is released from the spring.  Forward, once the spring piston is fully released and inertia drives it into the front of the compression chamber.  I'm not an air gun buff, so I may be wrong.  Just my .02   Patriot

The double recoil of a springer rifle gets worse as the power goes up on the rifle.  In other words rifles like the RWS 48, 52 and 350M, the Beeman Kodiak(Webley Patriot), Crow Magnum are just some of the ones that are notorious for killing scopes that would stand up to the pounding of a .378 Weatherby Magnum.  I had a Beeman Kodiak ruin a new Leupold scope that wasn't air rifle approved.  You don’t have to worry about pump-ups, Co2 or PCP rifles as there is no double recoil.  Lawdog
