Great looking deer, are you getting it mounted? I noticed you cut a long ways up the neck.

Yes I cut way too far and cut the throat for some stupid reason..shot him in the neck and he bled out before i walked up to him..Might use a replacement cape on him..Never had a deer mounted before and screwed up big time.. researched it a bit and have a good Idea how to now..Probably never get a chance at one like this again but who knows??..Happy as heck with him..One shot 30/06 165gr interlock at about 60-70 yards through the neck.northern alberta near wandering river..

Check with your taxidermist, they can get you a new cape or they may have a spare. My taxidermist has the local butcher shop save all the big capes for that reason. He just buy the capes and has them on hand. I would have that as a wall hanger in my house.

A good taxidermist can make that vertical cut completely unnoticeable. They can stitch together the two sides carefully and make sure it goes in a dip on the mount contour, and no one will ever be able to tell. The horizontal cut is a bit more trouble, but with some careful patching and good artistry it too can be made to look rather natural. I would keep that cape, it has a beautiful texture and color contrast.

Congrats on the buck, he is a real trophy in anyone's book!

I second the B&C reccommendation, and I really love what the cape looks like......its gets almost white on the front, and the rest of his body seems to be a light gray.......i would never see a deer with that type of coloring here in Louisiana.....great buck..whatd it score??

Beautiful deer and like has already been stated about the cape is correct, keep the original a good taxidemist can blend in several cuts and it will look great on the wall.

Thanks for the kind remarks..Do not really knopw what it will score..Some of my friends have got big whitetail but say never one like this..I kind of rough scored it on b&c's website and came out with 171..Not sure if I did it correct..Just back from work today.Really happy with him though..I smiled for three days !!

I showed the picture to my taxidermist, he has been going taxidermy for well over 30 years and he said that the cape would show the cuts and would not look good.

Just remember a good mount starts in the field with us hunters.

you can always do a European mount. This is just the skull and antlers on a nice oak plaque. they do look good and it is something different.
