Moving to the Laredo Area. How is handgunning for deer & predators there? Must one lease for hunting access? Too hot for Feral Hogs?

Chinahand, Texas is almost all LEASE. There is some public land, but I don't know of any in the Laredo area. Bottomline, if you don't own, lease or have friend or family that owns land, then normally you don't hunt.

As for pistol hunting, I haven't been too many place that you can't take deer/hogs with the short barrel. As for being too hot for feral hogs, does it ever get cool? Tonight we are expecting the first freeze of the year, yesterday it was seventy degrees. By the end of the week we will be back in the low fiftiies. If you don't hunt when its hot, then you don't hunt.

Since Laredo is in the "Magic Triangle" (one of the most desirable areas in the US for "trophy" deer) I would imagine that the going rates for leasing hunting rights in that area will probably cause you to look more to the Hill Country, the Coastal bend or near West Texas for a lease. Best of luck. PS-it never gets too hot for hogs. They have become a problem and you can quite likely get local invitations to help try to eliminate them (an impossibility) or more truly only attempt to control them. You will learn a new way to hunt since everything in the pastures of that country either bites, stings or has thorns. For predators and varmints, you should have fun, but we don't mean prairie dogs. That area has a great supply of rattlers, badgers, javelina, coyotes, bobcats and lions. Oh, and the aforementioned hogs. BOL

Thank you both for the info. Sounds like I'd better save my pennies if I'm going to get any time afield. Used to spend lots of summers out after woodchucks, but deer in hot weather will take some getting used to.

Blackhawk 44, based on your name, could one assume you shoot a flattop? I have one and It is a longtime companion.

Here I am in Laredo Texas, been here about 4 yrs. Its not the end of the world but you can see it from here. The only advice I can give you about deer hunting is bring plenty of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. I mean alot.

Chinahand, you would have been right for a good many years. Back then, I had a passel of 44s and was going through more shells in a year than most folks see in a career. Then I built a 44Spec Old Model in the mid '70's. I've pretty much worn that ever since. Found that there just wasn't anything in Texas that needed the extra blast. If 250 grains at 950-1000fps won't handle it, you need to be looking for something with a stock on it. Besides, I was never partial to a truck gun. Have worn a belt gun since I was about 16. Good luck on your move to the Brush Country. Despite its apprearance, that cover probably houses more game and varmints per square mile than anywhere in the US. And Laredobob, you're not as near the edge as you think. Now if you could see Pandale or Dryden from there you'd be a lot closer. BOL
