Which Primer is Hotter?
« on: December 12, 2004, 10:10:24 PM »
See where a lot of people are wanting to convert from 209 shotgun primers to handgun primers.  I haven't tested them to see which is the hottest, but I personally think the shotgun primer would be.  When I pop a large rifle primer in the dark garage in my Handi I get about two feet of flame.  When I pop a 209 in my H&R 12 ga I get about six feet of flame.  Sometimes Pyrodex and Triple 7 are hard to ignite.  I want to use the hottest primer I can get.  Expecially since I hunt bears with my Huntsman.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

The reason that folks seem to be moving away from shotgun primers to rifle/pistol primers are not to get a "hotter" primer - in fact pretty much the opposite.
From my understanding is that the 209 primers are so hot/strong that they have a tendency to move the bullet in the barrel before the powder can correctly ignite.  This movement causes a decline in accuracy.  The primers from pistol primers gives all the ignition needed for the muzzle loader, without affecting accuracy.

Go to this site for a better explanation than I could give:
