22. cal for target and hunting
« on: December 13, 2004, 05:37:52 AM »
I do not own a pistol but am looking at getting one soon.  The purpose of this gun will be for target and coon hunting.  I normally hut with partners at night for coon with hounds.  I sometimes go alone and hauling dog and long gun out of woods is at times a chore.  I have went to the store and held many types and styles.  After that I searched this form for feed back on the ones I might buy.  I have narrowed it to two guns.  The Browning Buckmark and the Walter (forgot the model).  If anyone has feedback both pros and cons I'll like it.  Brian

I've owned a ton of them over the years and have settled on the Buckmark. Found me one in full camo even. Nah it don't shoot any better but dang it do look cool.

As much as I hate to agree with Graybeard :), I'd pick the Buckmark too given those choices.

I went tonight to Gander Mountain to shop (window) more.  The one that feels the best is the Buckmark Camper.  It has a heavier barrel than the plain Buckmark.  The grip feels the same as the orignal model.  The price is $219 for the camper and $230 for the plain.  Thanks for the input.

Hmm?

Never hunted (for racoons) after dark...but seems like I would be looking for a single-shot or revolver.  I'd rather stomp through the woods after dark with but one round at the ready...since I'm bound to step into a hole or trip over the first log in the path.  :?

I would go with the buckmark with a red dot and a suitable holster or carry pocket. I would carry the gun with the magazine full and the chamber empty   because you won't need a round until the coon is treed. The red dot gives better sighting in the dark.  Having an auto will be nice if you need to make several quick folllow-up shots if a boar racoon drops among your dogs.
