Temptation got the best of me. A new Sportster 17 HMR
« on: December 18, 2004, 04:57:56 AM »
Well, I just couldn't resist it any longer. It came in yesterday afternoon, mounted my scope on it and now the fun will begin. You guys are partly to blame for this lapse of fortitude  :)  :-D . I cannot wait to sight it in,  and start busting a few crows and squirrels with it. If I have as much fun as y'all do with yours, It is gonna be awesome. And I thank you for that.

Happy hunting,

Law Dog

Great purchase Law Dog, don't forget to try some of the Hornady 20 grain rounds in it. I have had the best luck by far with the Hornady rounds, the 17 grainers are tackdrivers....Merry Christmas and crows beware, there won't be much left of squirrels unless you shoot then in the head, the great part is the gun and caliber is capable of that out to 100 yards and More!!!!....<><....

P.S. get a good scope, the caliber deserves it....

Congrats, Lawdog!   :D  Clean it up good, inside and out, then shoot it a lot to get the bore broke in, hopefully you'll be shootin some tiny groups in no time and bustin some crows, starlings and squirrels!

I really appreciate you guys.
I put a 4X16X40 AO on it, and was in backyard late yesterday familiarizing myself with it, and was amazed how great a view I had of the squirrels, and birds in the trees around my home.
My intentions on squirrels is head shots only... Patience is on my side in the way that I squirrel hunt. Walk slowly, quietly, pause for long periods to scour the tree tops for movement, other sign. Spot squirrel, bust his head, let him drop, note location, do not move.  Pick out your next route so you can move as quietly as possible without being in the open very much. Maintaining your cover. Go pick up your quarry, and repeat this process.
I usually get several from this area, without walking a lot.
I feel that this little round will enhance my enjoyment.

I wonder why H & R only offers the .17HMR in a synthetic sportster, yet they offer the .22WMR in a Laminated Ultra version?  I want a .17HMR with the laminated stock.

I know all the arguments in favor of stainless actions and composite stocks, but I happen to like my metal blue and my stocks wood.  Real leather for slings too.  I'm a dinosaur, and I know it.
My prayers are always answered,  sometimes the answer is no...........

You can always add the laminated stock by either trading the synthetic for em or buying them outright from H&R. I've done that on three of mine cuz I like the laminated wood too.

Thats just what I did to my .17 HMR, looks just like my .223 now, as a matter of fact went to the range one day to shoot the .223 with plenty of ammo, opened the gun case and had my .17 HMR!!! Boy old age is tough!!!....<><....
