:D  Hey all,

My wife received a job offer in Rocky Mount, Virginia. I was wondering if anyone out there is from that area? We are leaving tomorrow, to check the area out.

Was just wondering what kind of area it is? I know its going to be beautiful, since its near the mountains!

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Jim

87-19, I personally have never been to that part of the country. But, I did buy a used Handi from a gentleman in Rocky Mount. Great guy, very straight-forward. Hope he is representative of the folks in the area.

About 4 hours southwest of me.  Beautiful part of the state.  Lots of lakes/rivers in that area.  Virginia only allows you to buy 1 gun per month, unless you have a conceal carry permit.  Mike

One pistol a month, Grandpa.

Rocky Mount is the county seat of the moonshine capitol of the world. You'll like it there.

I appreciate it guys. I had a response on another forum and this guy lives 1 1/2 hours away. He put me in contact with a retired Police Officer from the area (my profession). I am currently corresponding with him. Thanks again.

87-19 Im located about 30 minutes south of Rocky Mount, Virginia.  Rocky Mount is a lovely community and is located in the middle of what I call a "sportsmans paridise".  Smith Mountain Lake, Philpot Lake, Runnit Bag, Smith River, Shooting Creek, Turkey Cock Mountain, Chestnut Knob and the Blue Ridge Mountains are all well known destinations for outdoorsmen in the know.  These opportunities are all just minutes from the quiet and serene town of Rocky Mount.

Fantastic deer hunting, bear hunting, the best spring gobbler hunting in Virginia, all types of small game and varmint hunting as well as an endless variety of fresh water fishing for stripers, catfish, crappie, bass, muskie and trout await you.

Holla at me and I may be able to send you in the right direction.

iisabigone,

It sounds like you should be writing for a travel brochure company! That was an excellent description!

It sounds like you should be around Martinsville or Philpot Lake?

We have been in Rocky Mount since Friday. My Wife accepted the job offer and even got them to pay Her rent for 1 year! I have been looking at property and Rentals while She has been working. The way it stands right now, She will be starting work on JAN. 3 and we will take turns traveling back and forth.

I have been a Deputy Sheriff for 14 years and I think it might be a little more difficult for me to switch jobs. I am vested in my retirement and I don't know how receptive a Department would be hiring a 43 year old from out of state! All I can do is try.

MSP Ret, You are absolutely right, I should make the move. Like you have done, I want to be able to put the Ret after my handle! It doesn't matter if it's Warrick County Sheriff Ret or Franklin County Sheriff Ret.

   Either way, wish me luck!

Jim

Jim you have my good wishes. As far as the transfer/rehire, look at it this way, perhaps a department in the new spot would like to hire a trained, expierenced veteran instead of a young untrained person that might not work out. By now all your bugs have been worked out and are long gone!!! Best of Luck..And about the "Ret", after 32+ years like me and you can put it there also, but after you do there will always be those days you wish it were not there!!! What a great job we have, all they say is go out there, help and protect people, and we will give you a salary!! The best job in the world (until you get promoted and have to spend most of your day inside)!!!....<><....

87-19, if your certification will transfer, and I don't have a clue about that, you will have no trouble at all getting a job. Avoiding paying for training seems to be the highest priority in hiring cops in Virginia. I can tell some real horror stories about folks instantly hired after being fired from 2 and 3 other departments. You might try ATF. I'd even forgive you if you were hired for alcohol enforcement. As I mentioned, Franklin County is legendary for moonshining and it would be a good slot for an outdoorsy fellow who actually liked walking the creeks and ridges.

MSP Ret,

You are right, this is a great job we have! You put it perfectly when you said "help and protect people". That is what drives most of us, helping others.

The Sheriff was in Richmond for the week and I was unable to meet with him. I did have some positive feedback though. My Academy should transfer, would have do do the Virginia Law part of the Academy. Also found out that I can "buy" retirement time from my current job and prior Military time, and apply it to the retirement program in Virginia.

flintman,

Thanks for the number and info. I am back home now, 10:30pm last night. I will be coming back every month, i'll give you a call next time out.

Leftoverdj,

I don't think I could do the ATF job. Best I know, the Feds require a Bachelors Degree and I have an A.S. Degree in Law Enforcement. Some of the comments about "moonshining" sure had me thinking when I was driving the Mountain roads!

I really appreciate all the input from you guys, it has been very helpful.
