Beretta 391 or Remington 1187

Looking to buy one of these.    I like both.   Any reliability items for either.   Also about the alloy receiver vs. the steel.   Good, bad or not really a concern.   How about additional barrel costs.    I am looking to hunt 20% of the time, and shoot clays the other 80%.     Thank for any help.

Many of my friends with whom I shoot sporting clays use Beretta semi-autos.  Then again, many use 11-87s or 1100s.  I was leery of buying any semiauto shotgun for fear of jamming, but I bought an 11-87 and it has performed flawlessly.   My girlfriend is a lefty, and we bought her a left-handed 11-87, and it has performed flawlessly.   The only maintenance issue has been a couple of broken gas seal o-rings, easily and inexpensively replaced (must have broken upon disassembly for cleaning, because the gun always cycled).

Put a Ramline camo stock and forearm on it.  Have killed a turkey and a couple of doves with it.

Bought a Hastings rifled/cantilever scope mount barrel for it to hunt deer.  That' s a plus about Remingtons: you can find parts everywhere.

I don't mean to sound like a fanatic., but the Beretta 391 is hands-down the winner as far as quality and reliabilty.  It isn't even close.

Go to the clays tournaments and look at what the large majority of shooters (particularly the pros) are using.  They are the Beretta autos. You might also want to go on the internet and look up articles on reliabilty of autos, and you will find that the Beretta is overwhelming favored.

I have fired as many as two cases of shells through my Beretta without cleaning it, and it has never jammed, . . . not once.  This is not at all unusual, and other Beretta owners will tell you the same thing. If you research the articles, you may find a test that was performed, where 1,000 shells were fired through a Beretta 391 without any cleaning.  Again, no jams, . . not once.

   Just my experience and opinions.

Best Regards,  Big Paulie

P.S.-  The Remingtons have rubber (or polymer) "O" rings which serve to seal the gases as they pass through the action mechanisms.  These O rings must be kept lubricated, and they break and fail with a fair amount of frequency, meaning that you have to buy new ones or keep a spare set on hand.

Thge Beretta has no O rings, or plastic, rubber or polymer parts in the gas system.  It is all metal and it doesn't break.

hard one to answer, parts are cheaper and available on the remington.beretta is a better made gun and feels better to me..if you are going to put thousands of rounds thru gun, both would be fine.. its all what you like, if it feels good i would pick the one that does..i like the beretta on feel..
