Whats a good way to beef up the dog on a coil spring? Caught a big male coyote the other day and he had crunched the dog down so it was bent like the cross frame. Wanted to remake the set with the same trap, but forgot my pliers so I couldn't straighten out the dog. I've had this happen once before, but the dog was completely torn from the trap and couldn't be found. I think he ate it. That coyote definitly got his daily allowance of iron and lead that day. Any ideas would be appreciated. Worm

Tom, what makes the dogs you have coyote proof? I thought about welding some #9 wire on top of my dogs, but I'm not that great a welder and figured I would burn it in two. Thanks, Worm.

short chains and setting the trap so that the coyote crosses OVER the dog will reduce chewing on the dog simply because of the position of the dog to the coyotes mouth.

I have about a 3% chew rate on my dogs- so little i don't even worry about it. I always carry my pliers and I always have an extra dog or two in my pocket.

You could always go to dogless traps.....

I have some #2 & #3 dogless monty's I use a lot, but also have  victor 1.75's, duke 1.75's and #2's. Not to mention the large number of #3dls's I use. Tom mentioned his beefed up dogs as well as reenforcing the dog on the trap. I understand what you mean about having the dog positioned so the coyote has to cross over dog so it would be under his leg and harder to get at. I caught the coyote in a flat set and am not sure how he approached the set. The only backing was a small clump of alfalfa where I poked the 2 lure holes. I was amazed at how many times he rolled when he saw me coming. Glad I beefed up the trap and installed 2 in-line swivels. I already use short chains with a double stake swivel, unless its rigged up on a drag. I'll try your suggestion about having the dog away from the backing instead of the dog facing the backing.  Thanks, Worm.
