Weatherby Calibers for Encore
« on: December 19, 2004, 03:42:18 PM »
I was wondering if anyone has had any Weatherby calibers made for an Encore. I wanted a .257 Weatherby Mag but was told by Bullberry and Virgin Valley(before they closed) that they would not chamber the .257 Weatherby because of the high pressures.
I would like to get a Weatherby Caliber made for my Encore below the .300 Weatherby Mag size.
Any info is appreciated.

I do not think anyone will chamber a Weatherby caliber in an Encore. The wall if the chamber would be to thin to handle the pressure. My buddy and I were talking the other day about Weatherby calibers and neither one of us could find a reason to have one. If you like the Weatherby calibers that is great, but there are so many other rounds that will do what the Weatherby calibers can do with out all the extra pressure. Plus the price for the Weatherby brass is crazy.  Good luck in your search.  :D

Weatherby Barrel

I have a 29" full bull 1" - 257 Wtby. Mag. barrel made by Mike Sirois of On Target Technologies, LLC. It is a great barrel it is made from a douglas blank. I am shooting 100gr Nosler B-T's and it will easily shoot under an I" at 100yds and I have had a group of 1.1" at 300yds of the bench with it. Still trying different loads and bullet weights at this time.

You can see some of his work on the Specialty Pistols web site, http://specialtypistols.infopop.cc/6/ubb.x?a=cfrm&s=9066056864&ORIGINAL_REFERRER_URL=http%3A%2F%2Fspecialtypistols.infopop.cc%2F6%2Fubb.x%3Fa%3Dcfrm%26s%3D9066056864

Curious what the wall thickness difference would be between a .300 Win Mag (which they do chamber for) and a .300 Weatherby Mag (which they don't).

Im pretty sure that before Virgin Valley went down they offered some of the smaller caliber Weatherbys.  Nothing .30 or above, though.  And Im almost positive I saw some Encore chambering in a few Lazzeroni cartridges, but not to sure there.

This is only my opinion, based just on what I see.

T/C has a few basic barrel contours that fit into their frames. T/Cs problem is that some contours can only support cartridges based on the 300 or 375 H&H cases of a certain length. The chamber to barrel transition area is fixed (to make all the barrels with the same contour fit into the same sized front stock) and long cartridges can make this area too thin (this eliminates a number of Weatherbys right off the bat).

The chamber area is limited in diameter too. The new WSMs would thin the wall diameter of the chamber area a bet more than T/C likes.

As for all the other “big” rounds they don’t chamber for, those rounds exceed the frame’s ability to hold up under the pressure.

Mik   I am curious if a 'full bull custom' barrel would make  that transition area thicker due to the barrel diameter basically the same from breech to muzzle the same ?

Actually it is not the "pressure" which limits the cartridge, but rather the case head thrust.  The T/C will easily handle the 63,000 psi of the .25-06, but it is stressed by the .300 WSM at the same chamber pressure.  Why?  Because the thrust against the breech is defined by the chamber pressure multiplied by the maximum internal area of the case.  Estimates for these examples:

.25-06 @ 63,000 = 8000 lbs of force
.300 WSM @ 63,000 = 11,000 lbs of force

It is the extra 3000 lbs of force against the breech which matters, not the chamber pressure.

If that is so then a .300 win mag and a .300 Wea mag would essentially have the same headthrust pressure as both use the same head size brass and I believe operate at the same nominal pressures.

The issue is not thrust in this instance, with the .300 Weatherby it is the case diameter at the shoulder.  The Weatherby has its shoulder placed farther forward, into the portion of the barrel which is tapered.

.300 Weatherby.....0.492" @  2.384"
.300 Winchester.....0.490" @ 2.196"

The Weatherby shoulder is almost 0.20" further forward, reducing the thickness of the barrel steel too much.  The SAAMI presure limits are virtually the same for each cartridge, 64,000 psi for the Winchester and 65,000 psi for the Weatherby.
