Was taking a friend around to the stores today so she could shop.

I wandered into the sporting department as I do whenever I am there.  Saw a NEF in the show case, it wasn't labeled and I could not see the barrel markings.  Had to find someone to show it to me.  Tough day for that.  Anyway when I got it in my hands, it was a 30-30.  Been looking for one for about a year.  Took about a hour to make it mine.  Two new Handi's in one month, I am one lucky guy this Christmas.

Thanks Quick, MSP and Bob.  Seem to always have good luck, don’t know why, because it has not been a life without sin.

I have MUCH to be grateful for, two sons who have given me eight grandchildren, now six thru seventeen and very healthy, smart and nearby.  But luck has always been with me, three tours “in harms way” during my military career, still have all my body parts and healthy.  One piece of bad luck is my grandchildren’s mothers will not let me teach them to shoot.  But I get to spoil them any other way that I can.

Lucky to have this website to go to.  It’s like being a member of a “Hunting and Shooting Club” that has meetings every day.  How great is that!

Now we are home and others are in harms way this Christmas season and all we can do now is pray for them, and support them and their families.

Merry Christmas to all.

Congrats on your find. My 30-30 absolutely LOVES Remington 150 SP, you know, the "GREEN BOX LOAD". Yeah, that silly stuff. Mine will put three of those into practically the same hole at 50 yards. If I was smart, I'd quit trying to reload for this thing and just feed it a steady diet of that Remington ammo.

I topped my off tonight with a Simmons 8 point 3-9x40. Probably not a great scope but it is a good step up fromt he BSA 4x32 I've had on it. Scope is long enough that it sits back over the action so I don't have to crawl the stock to get a good picture.

Good luck with yours,

John

John, I think you've convinced me that the 150gr rems will be what I'll shoot in my .30-30, and at the $8-$10 a box cost, can't really be beat!   Thanks!!!

Remington factory loads
« Reply #9 on: December 23, 2004, 02:20:11 PM »
I'llbet you can duplicate the factory load.  Pull the bullet on one, then take a good look/smell of the powder.  You can bet your britches it will be IMR powder of some sort.  Weigh the charge.  Buy the powder.

You probably already know that you can buy Remington core-lokt bullets in bulk from several suppliers, like Lock, Stock & Barrel in Valentine NE.
Rem. primers too.

Put 'em together and there you have it.

I wasn't planning on handloading for th.30-30, factory ammo is cheap in comparison to others that I do want to handload for and I have too many guns to shoot all of em very much, the .45-70 and .270 are the only 2 at this time that I plan on loading, and maybe the .357 maxi since I got a set of dies off ebay for it, thanks, tho....

I got my .30/30 Handi at Walmart a little over a year ago.  I went in to special order one and learned they had one coming in with the next delivery. So, I put half of the money down. I got a call the next day the rifle was in and went down on my lunch break to pick it up. It took over an hour and a half to get out of the store. I give Walmart one thing. They are sticklers for paper work. Heck the even carried it to my car for me.

I has some problems with it at first. It kept opening up every time I fired it. I was going to send it back for repair. Then I did some reading here and learned it just needed a real good cleaning. I had clean it when I first got it home but I guess it wasn't good enough. I completely sprayed the action down with carb cleaner.  I haven't had a problem since.

My likes 170g Remington Green box ammo although I have been playing around with cast bullets and a load of 17.5g of IMR4198 over a 170g Lee C309-170-F has promise. Once hunting season is over I plan on getting back to handloading.

Right now she is wearing an old 3-9x Tasco I had laying around. But once I'm done paying Christmas I hope to upgrade the scope to something a little better.

I have also done the O-ring modification and have sanded down the forearm barrel channel a little. It was really pressing hard against one side of the barrel. It seems to have helped.

Here's a pic:
