Recoil related problems
« on: December 27, 2004, 04:54:04 PM »
I have a S&W 629 Classic with a B-Square base, Burris Zee Rings, and a Bushnell 3200 2 X 6 scope. I can shoot 44 special loads all day and have no problems but if I shoot 20 or 30 full power 44 mag loads, the mounting screws loosen up and the scope and mounts almost fall off the gun. My question to those of you who know; will lock tite do the trick or is there a chance that the screws I have may possibly be undersized? Any suggestions of what steps I need to take to correct the problem would be greatly appreciated.....
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

First remove the mount and try the screws in the holes. They should screw in nicely and not wobble or very little. Next make sure your screws are not bottoming out in the holes if they are not drilled though the top strap when you install the mount. Make sure you are getting them tight and tighten them evenly. Make sure the mount fit's the gun well, in other words it does not rock or wobble when placed on the bbl. If it does find out why, fix it or toss it for a better mound.  Remember that when you fire a hot round things move, stretch, flex. The better things fit the better they can flex together. Hope this helps some.

Those old B-Square bases are really a pretty good product. I've used them in the past on all kinds of S&W guns and they've taken some pretty stiff recoil and stayed rock solid. Been a long time since I mounted one of the 2-3 I still have left around here but it seems I recall there is a cupped lock washer involved that keeps tension on the screws or at least some of them. Do you have this and are you using it? I also seem to recall on one of them they provided a plastic ball to use to seat one screw against. It's really not very reuseable but a lead shot, forget which size, works fine as a substitute.

But in general if screws are working loose blue loctite is the answer.

Get in touch with Jack Weigand at: http://www.jackweigand.com/. I'm sure he'll help you out. Makes a very good mounting system.
