209 to a 25acp or 22hornet
« on: December 23, 2004, 10:35:13 AM »
I have read all the hype on the two but wich is better and what are the bad points to each??  ..my encore shoots a clover at 100 yards and a 4" group at 200 yards.I can not ask for any thing more..But the crud ring sucks and i can't stand the blow back fouling of the frame..So before I spend the 60+$ I want to know if this is the best thing since the invent of toilet paper..or what and is there other places to get them.and can you make them yourself (extra breech plug and a drill???)
I have yet been able to shoot a 3 shot sub 1" group at 100 yards ...........on any deer!!!!!!

buckenbass,
If you haven't spent some time reading Cecil's ramblings on Precision Rifle.com Site, I think it would be worth your time.  I don't own an Encore or experienced first-hand their crud ring problems that so many have complained about.  But....I did read at least some initial writings where Cecil spent considerable efforts to improve performance issues with a number of different muzzle loaders, all in the name of improving a good share of the best muzzle loaders on the present day market.

When the crud ring became a serious concern, he began looking for a way to remedy the problem with reduced primer charges by finding available primed straight-necked cartridges that could be retrofitted to an existing breech-plug.  Can you build one....most likely.  The man is attempting to make a decent living at his m/l bullet business, and has produced a desirable product that has helped many people with this problem.  He will take time to answer your questions, if you want to ask.

When I first got my Omega with the stock 209 plug, it was practically unshootable.  Only VERY careful manipulation of the cleaning rod kept it from getting stuck in the crud ring; numerous times I had to pull the plug or otherwise mess around for A LONG TIME to get to the next shot.
I switched to the 25 ACP.  I don't believe they even sell the 22 Hornet anymore, as it required trimming all of the cases you bought.  The 25 ACP uses the cases exactly as they come, no messing around.  The Omega closes a little tight on a new casing, but after that first time they are right on.
The crud ring is now gone for all practical purposes.  There is still an increased layer of fouling in the 2-3 inches of the breech, but nothing not easily cleaned out with a spit patch.  IMHO, this conversion made 777 feasible in my gun.  Without the conversion, I would have had to revert to pyrodex...which I hated due to the cleanup hassle.

AndyHass, very good answer. You beat me to the punch.  :-D

buckenbass there is a person modifying the 209 breech plug to 25ACP for $25.00. E-mail me and I will give you that info. I don't think his name is allowed to be posted here.  :D

I use Goex powder , makes shooting a lot cheaper. Just converted my Encore to the 25 ACP. Without cleaning between each shot when I try to load the third time I lack 3/4" of properly seating the sabot. I see no $65 advantage to the 25 ACP.
Same powder charge and sabot load will shoot well in my Thunderhawk and Renegade at least a half dozen times without swabbing the bore.
