What is the correct position for the gas valve in the fire position, grenade launch, etc.? I just got a Yugo SKS and I am unfamiliar with the gas system. Thanks

I have mine in the 3 o'clock position for general shooting, as you look along the length of the barrel.

You should have it in the down position for semi-automatic fire.

Be sure to clean the bolt completely. The firing pin should be able to slide inside the bolt freely.

ridgerunner is correct take the the bolt apart by knocking the pin that holds the firing pin in.  This is a must to do to avoid slam fires which can happen at anytime even though the pin appears loose after just washing/soaking  the bolt like most guys do isn't good enough because they may still be crud insde the firing pin bore in the bolt that can still jam the firing pin.  I have no clue why most sks owners avoid doing this process and put themselves and others in danger but they do.  Please besafe and do it right.  Many blame the sks when it happens but its the owners neglect in not doing it right by cleaning the bolt properly.  I don't mean to rant here but its a safety rant and i can't stress safety enough its a really fun gun and you'll enjoy it for many years too.  Congrats on your purchase because there are so many who miss out on this awesome gun.  The SKS was my very first military semi auto purchase and after all these years i still have my first one it can take a licking and keep on ticking and the best thing is its cheap to feed too just shop around for ammo and watch for sales at AIM SURPLUS and SPORTSMANS GUIDE you may see it for as little as $59/1,000rds at times too.  If you remember your very first 22lr semi auto rifle this one is even more fun so ENJOY!!!!!

My kids worked their way up from their "BB" gun to a Ruger 10/22 to an SKS and after shooting the SKS all they said was WOW!!!!!  Of course they were older when they shot it.  And they raised hell with the soda cans. :D
