New Ruger 10/22, what mods first?

I know this has probably been covered several times. I just bought a 10/22 and am wondering what mods to do first. I have large fingers so a magazine release is a must. Figured to replace the trigger group (hammer/sear/springs/bolt release). Anything else I need to look into? Any suggestions on manufacture of trigger parts?

.......You might want to try rimfirecentral.com.....10-22 lovers all over and good info.....I've had good luck with Clark custom and Volquartsen hammer/sear combos......the extended mag release can get too large and be too easy to hit....I like the smaller extended ones for my field guns.......the oversize hammer/trigger pins and action pins really helped my guns take advantage of the new hammer/sear and made the trigger pull much more consistant......bed the action and first two inchs or so of the barrel and free float the rest of the barrel.......I like Acraglass Gel for bedding.........experiment with different ammo as every gun has likes and dislikes and some shoot like different guns with similar ammo.........good scope mount/rings and scope for your type shooting......enjoy the new gun and all the "work" now required?....lol......good luck and good shooting!!

I have had a 10/22 for close to 30 years,model 140,I did the Mag release and added a Muzzle brake and a cheap 2X scope,and then the Brake got in the way and took it off,never let me down and have shot dogs and coyotes the most with it.That is not so,I have killed hundreds of Ground Squirrels with the 10/22,the damage to the Hermitage airstrip is bad do to the GS's.

First I would shoot about 500 rounds of decent rimfire ammo thru it to get a base line of performance then go from there. Rimfire Central is a good place to start.

absolutely replace the hammer (and trigger if you want no post travel).
If you get stovepipe jams, also replace the extractor.  pop in a YellowJacket bolt buffer if you use a scope (kills vibration and quiets the rifle bolt clank) Best place for parts is http://cheapgunparts.com  also check out http://rimfireforums.com to find other ruger 10/22 talk areas.  I run a free site at http://ruger22.com that has hundreads of digital photos showing how to break down your 10/22 for cleaning and making just about any kind of mod on it.

I'm working on one right now. My stuff in order,  Hammer first (volquartsen), bolt buffer (weaponcraft),  extractor (exact edge - volquartsen).

Next I'll be looking for a barrel and stock set.

Upgrading to a T/C Classic Benchmark and saving all the money (plus some) that you'd otherwise spend on modifications???   :grin:

don't bother changing the springs and sear in the trigger group.  Replace ONLY the hammer with either a Power Custom or a Volquartzen.

Bolt buffers are everywhere...hawktech arms sells a couple for $6 delivered.

You'll probably eventually want a new barrel if you like to hit what you aim at consistently.

Forget rimfirecentral.com if you are not part of there "inner-circle"  They treat new people like garbage.

Consider this a warning Bill does not allow folks to come here and try to drag folks away from this site to theirs. It is a different story if you send some one to a site for help. I tend to agree with Jim. It was a pretty blatant attempt just to draw folks to your site. Without prior approval from me such posts are generally not allowed.

What you may do is to have a hot link to your site at the bottom of each of your posts or even as your signature line. Then contribute to the discussion here and earn the respect of the members here. That way if you earn their respect they will want to visit you site to see what you have to offer. That is a perfectly honorable and accepatable way to increase the traffic at your site. But to knock other sites and beg folks to come to yours isn't.

I have no problem at all letting folks get visibility for new sites thru their posts here at GBO. Always happy to help new site owners get started. BUT not when they knock other sites to try and help their own. Just not the way to do business in my opinion.

So please limit your blatant attempts to pull folks to your site. Just help then with problems and give the link. If you earn their respect they will visit your site. If they like what they see they will continue to visit.
