25-06 ammo
« on: September 24, 2004, 04:32:11 PM »
Local Gander Mountain has a clearance sale going on Federal Premium 100gr Barnes X, coated. These are 2002 manufacture.
What do you .25 users think of the bullet for northern whitetail?
I was not impressed with the results of 100gr Nosler Ballistic Tips, they came with the gun so I gave them a try, very accurate. I won't be using them again for deer.
I prefer 120gr but the price is right and Barnes makes some good bullets.
Thanks.

I like you prefer the 120 grain bullet for my 25-06. I load my own and use Nosler Partitions for my hunting load. Although I've never used them, the Barnes bullets are a premium bullet. I have heard reports that some rifles don't like them as far as tight groups. If they group tight in your rifle they would surely do the job. I've also heard that moly coating can be a pain. People either swear buy it or regret using it. If they are the blue moly coated bullets I would get feed back from those that use or have used them. Hope this helps.

tbmaker,

I am a big "Quarter Bore" fan and a even bigger fan of the .25-06(got three at the moment).  For any deer the 100 grain Barnes Coated(XLC?) will work just fine.  My favorite bullet was the 115 grain Nosler Partition but I found the Barnes bullet would out penetrate the Nosler.  The only problem many had with the XLC/X bullets from Barnes was accuracy.  Trouble getting them to group.  I am trying the TSX from Barnes and it is much easier to get to group.  Those Federal Premiums should work just fine.  You don't need 120 .257 bullets for deer.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

I am a closet quarter bore fan, and I have  a .257 Roberts. The 117gr. shoot great out of the gun, nut put 120gr. bullets in it, and forget it. My gun is a Ruger 77 MKII, and others I have talked to that own this gun say their's perform great with 87gr. or 100gr. bullets. I don't reload at the moment, and have thought about getting a 25-06, if I ever sale my .257 (currently  for sale). I just feel more comfortable with the 117 and 120 gr bullets as compared to the lighter ones when it comes to shooting muleys and whitetails.

Barnes XLC

I have a TIkka WH, in .25-06 Rem, and am in the process of comparing 100 gr XLC,
and TSX Barnes bullets.  The XLCs, at this point, do not hold as pretty of groups,
as the TSX bullets.  But with some of my test loads, I am getting groups in the 1.25"
to 1.5" range, with the occasional sub MOA group.  This is plenty fine for hunting deer
out to 250 yards.  If the price was right, I'd buy a box, and get to the range.  If they
like your gun, then stock up on them.  On a side note, the TSX bullets are giving me
.6" to .75" groups, in the first batch of test loads, that found a sweet spot when
I dialed in the COL.  With just a bit more dialing  , I believe I can get this gun to
put these TSX bullets into one ragged .5" hole.  This should be good out to 500 yards,
for deer, if one's abilities go that far.  As for a 100 gr X bullet being enough for deer,
just get them close to vitals, or the spine, and get the frying pan hot...Venison tenderloins
 are for supper!

Is this for the ready made bullet, or bullets for reloading?  Also, price?

I believe he is talking about the whole round, bullet, casing, powder, etc.

I too saw these at my Gander Mt. I was going to pick a box up to try them but instead chose the Winchester 115grn Ballistic Silvertip for deer this year.

Next year I will be reloading my deer loads for the 25. Curently, I reload my g-hog loads in 25/06. Hornady 75grn V-Max torching at 3575fps using 56.5grns of IMR 4350. Certainly turns a groundhog inside out.

One thing I really like about the Winchesters is that they have the same POI as the 75ers do. I was suprised.....

I love my 25-06 for sure. I have had very good results with 100gr BT and soft points. This year I dug out some 99 vintage 75gr HP reloads to use on crows and ground hogs. I'm gonna post this somewhere else too but am I crazy to consider the 75gr HP for deer? with this round I can hit out to 400yds with scary accuracy. I have grown very fond of this load. Am I loosing it?

HogFan -

My .25 is a Ruger M77, not a MKII, and it loves Barnes 115g TSX and Speer 120g Grand Slam bullets.

Consider this: A lot of people use the .22-250 (where legal) with 55gr pills
for their deer rifles. My Dad and brother have taken scores of mulies in
Nebraska with this round. A good lung shot never failed to put them down
within 50 yards.

Are you talking Hornady 75gr HP? Years ago, I killed two mulies with the
Hornady 75gr HP out of the 25-06 loaded at 3300fps. Both were lung shots,
both pass-throughs, and both were down in under 50yds.  So, if you're
losing it, I lost it a long time ago!  :)

I have used 100 grain speer Boat tails for the past 4 years on Antelope and Deer and use the same on prairie dogs. I have had no bullet failures on the big game. Bullet placement is still the thing, if you do your part the bullet should do it's.

Find a bullet you like to shoot and your gun likes and shoot it. There is no subsitute for trigger time. :)
