.225 Win.... What happened to it?
« on: October 30, 2009, 01:08:25 AM »
Now I know next to nothing about the Winchester .225 cartridge  :-[ except that it's come up possibly in connection with a strange rifle that may be on offer. Doing a little reading last night I found that Winchester introduced it in 1964 but it seems to have vanished or almost vanished  ??? so what's the deal with it?

Anyone know  ;)

It didn't quite match performance of the well established pair (.220 Swift and .22-250) it was designed to compete with. No one but Winchester ever chambered it so it just withered on the vine so to speak. Most of the brass sold is now used in Contenders chambered to wildcats designed by JD Jones of SSK Industries.

It's a strong case and serves as an excellent base for handgun rounds in the Contender. There is nothing wrong with it and performance isn't all that far behind the .22-250 but it's just not offered in rifles most folks want.

I owned one years ago in a Savage 340. A frieng of my father in law wanted it more than i did. I sold it. He has killed deer with it almost every year that he has owned it. Not my idea of a deer rifle but it works for him. :o

It still has it's followers.
I have 2 Win model 70s in it.
1 standard and the other a heavy varmint.

I also have a Win model 670 in it, just a cheaper version of the model 70.

I have an old 22 jet Handi barrel rechambered in it.

My pride is an old Rem model 30S EXPRESS custom I had done with a 28" Pacnore barrel and custom stock.

It is a fine cartridge and can do about anything the 22-250 can.
It is only 150 to 200 fps behind the 250 with the same weight bullet.
It's just a neat old rimmed cartridge.
Win was the only one to load ammo for it as far as I know and they still do.
Win Super X 55 gr soft point in the silver box.
They have used two different colored primers in the past.
A silver and a brass one and in my guns they do not shoot the same.
Brass is also still available.

It was a rimmed round in a rimless world.
Would be a good round for a Martini, Ruger No 1, Handi, or even a Winchester 1895 lever or Enfiled bolt action (not sure about the pressure).

Thank you all for your help and information  :) I am researching this particuler rifle although after the initial contact the owner has not been in touch since I expressed interest  :(  and it's possible that this rifle is a prototype and may not have seen production. All I can do now is wait.

I've got one in a Model 70 XTR that I found with a very sad barrel. It now wears a 26" 3 groove Stainless Pac-Nor with a 1~9" twist. As expected it has the Winchester slanted box magazine to feed the semi-rimmed cartridges, and it feeds them absolutely perfectly.
I have no problem getting 4000 fps out of 40 grain Ballistic Tips, about 3600 from a 55 grain bullet and 3100 fps from a 69 grain Sierra. Not quite a 22-250, but much more fun.
Wouldn't change it for anything.

I had to pass on a Model 70 in .225 at the last gun show.  I really wanted it, but I promised not to buy another gun for a year.  It would be perfect for the Handi.

Oh dear a year  :o .................. a full year  :'( that's almost a life sentance  :(

Sorry to hear that swampman and I am being serious!

I am already suffering withdrawal as I am having to sell two rifles to make room for three more and that's not counting this one if it comes off.

One thing not mentioned about the 225 is that it came out at the same time Winchester made cuts in their production and quality.

I have two Winchester 70 rifles in 225. They are a nice rifle but I do not shoot them often. Post '64 may not be as good as the pre '64 but they are still a good rifle imho

The post-64s tend to be more accurate.  The pre-64s tolerances aren't that great but they are nice looking.  The new FNs are the best Winchesters yet.

I know this is getting off subject.
But Where do you rate the Post 64's with the Pre 64 claw action?

Pretty nice guns IMO.  They are attractive & reliable.  I don't think they are quite as accurate out of the box as the new FN Winchesters.  The equipment at New Haven was pretty worn & out dated.

Being a bit picky, but it was actually a semi-rimmed case like the cartridge it replaced, the .220 Swift.  The rim was larger than the case body, but it headspaced on the shoulder.  Thus it did not suffer the case life problems that seem to plague many rimmed and belted bottleneck cases.

Bullet Dia    neck Dia     Shoulder    Base   Rim Dia   Rim Thick   Case Length    CTG Lenght
.224           .260           .406         .422   .473       .045             1.93             2.5
So yes a .051" rim is not much of a rim.  When you look at a 30-30 that has a .08" rim.

Unfortunately for the 220 Swift the brains at Winchester the introduction of the 225 resulted is them discontinuing the 220 Swift in favor of the 225 WIN - at which time they "shot" themselves in the foot twice with one stroke. Winchester never recovered from the 22-250 REM and recently tried again with the 223 WSSM - the only real improved WSSM of the 3 WSSM's IMO. While an excellent cartridge ( I own one) the lawsuit loss and production problems has caused the third 224 caliber Winchester cartridge to be discarded. It would have been easier for Winchester to have tarted up the 220 Swift for the predator - varmint market rather than benchrest short fast approach. Remington appears to own the small caliber market as Winchester does the 6 MM market with the 243 WIN.

I thought the 220 Swift shot it self in the foot with the throat errosion and barrel wear out rummors.
As well as requiring a standard action.  The 22-250 was a short action.
I have a freind that swears by the 25WSSM.   But the WSSM's are another post.

How exactly does something shoot itself in the foot with rumors?

Load the rumors in the breach.
Take careful aim and hold your breath,
Slowly pull the trigger and ......
No other shooters telling of how fast the accuracy went to heck and the barrel had to be replaced.
Stopped me from getting one way back when.  Had my friend get a 22-250 made.
