State, Feds To Crack Down On Carmel's Wild Boars

CARMEL, Calif. -- State and federal officials are cracking down on some unwanted visitors that have a group of Carmel homeowners squealing.
About three dozen wild boars have been digging up yards and destroying landscapes as they root around the yards and fields of a neighborhood near the Carmel Lagoon.
Officials say several yards have been dug up so badly by the pigs that they look like fields that have been just been plowed.
But officials are going to get tough with the animals. The parks department is giving the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal Damage Control Agency $50,000 for five years for pig-control services.
The money will pay for officers to trap the boars, shoot them and ship them to a tallow plant in Salinas.
