S&W gold mine
« on: August 16, 2005, 02:20:38 AM »
I have been buying N frames for a long time and the early ones have largely dried up. I stopped at a sporting goods store last month, it is one of the big National chain stores, and was pleased to find a 5", 4 screw .357 mag. in 98% condition. I was more pleased to see that the price was only $249. Last week I went back and found a near perfect 38-44 Outdoorsman. It was almost as cheap. They are both in the safe. Guess these big stores don't have people who know guns very well. I am going to keep going back. Actually I did go yesterday and there was a 5 screw 15 for $200 but the rear sight was missing. I have found similar.

One store, sold me a pre 15, 99% made in 1953 in original box with cleaning kit, screwdriver and original grips, all for $190 out the door!

The thinking is:  the old revolvers will set around for ever if not marked cheap...everybody wants a bottom feeder.

Still N frames at those prices is something else all together.  Great find(s).

Shotgunner and Happyhunter - the low prices on S&W blue steel revolvers is nice to hear about.  I saw the same phenomena in my neck of the woods at least 10 years ago when all the new stainless revolver models started coming out - seemed nobody wanted the old blue steel any longer (fools, more for me).  I had two gun dealers tell me that they couldn't sell the old blue steel K and N frames - everybody wanted the new stainless L frame or just stainless.

At that time I wanted to turn over a 6.5" blue M29 for a 4" in the same flavor but could not find a decent deal anywhere in a 3 city radius.  However, S&W handled the need just fine by rebarrelling the 6.5" with a 4" tapered barrel from a Mountain Gun, bead blasting the entire piece and bluing it to match.  And she is a sweetie, lemme tellya.  Easy to carry and very easy to shoot.  Yep, those big Smiths are my choice.  Mikey.
