CAS reconstituted newbie questions
« on: October 17, 2004, 07:08:44 AM »
I shot CAS about 10 yrs ago in British Columbia Canada. Lots has happened since then including parting with a lot of guns, an old wife, and aquisition of a new wife.

She and I went to a shoot yesterday at the new facility (Founder's Ranch) just outside Albuquerque NM. I have been talking to her for the last couple of years about CAS and showing her pictures and articles.

Yesterday was the first 'live' event she's seen. She liked it and we're now talking (more seriously) about getting involved.

My questions:
Is there a site where one can shop for used equipment - kinda like GB except with a CAS spin?

What are the different Cowboy organizations?

Are there facilities/events for kids using rimfire equipment?

Anybody got used guns/equipment for sale.. cheap?

Cheers
Kerry

There are the links to three forums that focus on Cowboy Action Shooting. You will find stuff for sale on all of them, some cheap, some not so cheap!

It's a fun game, welcome back!

Good Links there! I started out almost exclusively with stuff I purchased used from some of those sites.....and after four years am still using that same stuff most of the time.

The two major organizations are The Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) and The National Congress of Old West Shootists (NCOWS). There some smaller groups out there like Western Three Gun but I know little about them and have never shot in any of thier competitions.

SASS continues to be the big player in CAS, having more clubs and more members than any other outfit. NCOWS is probably the closest competitor they have. NCOWS is dedicated to Authenticy, both in clothing and in weapons, and is a major player in the midwest particularly Nebraska and Iowa. Two of the links above have NCOWS related forums that you should check out if yer interested in the authentic aspects of Cowboying. SASS, being less authenticity oriented, remains the most popular and is an international organization these days with clubs in places like Australia, New Zealand, Canada, England, and even Korea.

I belong to both SASS and NCOWS and enjoy both a great deal. So much so that I write for both organizations publications!

Hope we run acrost one another at a match sumday! 8)

I found some firearms on Auctionarms.com and gunbroker.com.  Course they both have the www. in front of them.

Take your time if you can and the right one will show up.  In the meantime go on out--there should be cowboys fighting over who will lend you and the Mrs. hardware and leather so you can join in the fun.

Hi TallyHo,
I also just got involved in CAS and I love it.  Getting to your question, I did a little research on the SA before I bought my SA.  I was fortunate in that I was able to go to Galyons and compared the different pistols.  I found that I liked the Beretta Stampede and it was in the price range for me.  It cost $508 and it has case hardening blue.  I LOVE this pistol and shoot very well with it.  I've already gone to 3 CAS meetings with it and when I shoot in the stage with one pistol I haven't missed.  I've missed though when I used someone elses pistol in the stage.  I kind of find that strange though.  Guess I'm just not use to the other pistol.
So go to different gun stores in your area and try the fit.  That's what made my mind up for me.  Hope that helps.

Happy Aurora Trails!
Chinxy!
