HIGH PRESSURE SHOTSHELL
« on: January 25, 2005, 12:22:20 PM »
Has anyone ever thought of loading shotshells to higher pressures.
10,000-15,000psi is standerd, but why not go to 25,000-35,000psi. I know it would require a much stronger action and brass hulls. But it would be nice to send a 2 ounce 12ga slug 3000fps.

plus you would need a barrel that is much thicker than the current slug gun...it would make the gun weigh more and not really be pratical...
charlie sharps of the TCA did an article on his attempt to turn a 12 bore encore slug gun into a poor mans 12 bore rifle....using dixie slugs...ie full bore riding 735gr 12 bore slugs..no sabot...they hit the rifling like a bullet...and he did it with blackpowder and smokeless...vel was in the 1400fps range or so....just like the old 12 bore guns...do the math...that is over 3000ftlbs of energy in a 10 pound gun...you don't really want to go any faster...2 ounces is 875 gr....so...at 3000fps it would generate 17000 ft lbs of energy...more than a 50 bmg....i woun't want to shoot it...

Right, I'm thinking of a gun that's about the same size as a BMG. But easier and less expensive to reload!Almost like a toned down 20mm.

I have a .410 that will take 48,000 psi. chamber presure. It a Douglas barrel on an M-44 Russian action. The only hitch in my getty-up is that in Oh. I can`t up all brass cases to load my slugs in, they must have plastic, and the regular cases start blowing out the rims at about 20 to 25, 000 psi., that a guess based on the velosity I`m getting. If I get this thigh the way I want it, it will be like a .405 Win., but probibly alittle faster.

Over on AR Rob, John and I are doing the 12GA FH,
or long name 12 Gauge From Hell. We figured out how to put 12 ga size rims on BMG brass. My cases are
3.85 in long.We are putting guns together now. The
chambers will still fire 2 3/4 inch plastic shotshells. Using .729 dia rifled barrels. Or we
could also use smooth barrels Rob is putting his on a big Borchardt falling block action and
it will hold full pressures. I have mine on a
Savage 210 bolt shotgun action, and I will run
up to 25-30,000 psi. Here is pictures, first 12GA FH case with a regular 12ga case, and second the
Savage with heavy barrel on.Should have it chambered
and ready to go by spring.Ed

HUBEL
Your action would be good for regular 3" brass loaded extra hot right?

Yes it would work for hot loads in 3 in brass cases.
Now by hot I mean 25-30,000 psi, as  all brass 3" cases you get now  are lathe turned, and that is the max pressure they handle safely. And with a heavy barrel like we are using, not original thin barrel.
Thin one isn't good for high pressures. The Savage has
3 locking lugs on bolt and its only limitation is the thickness of the reciever ring where bolt lugs
lock into it.Which is about 25-30,000 psi loads.
We are going to try to find someone to build an
extra thick, much larger outside diameter, heavy 210 action, using same bolt,
bolt carrier, trigger, sear, etc, with bigger barrel threads, to handle cases like ours and other BMG
size stuff at full pressures.Ed

They work really well for us ... but I recommend that you anneal the top half of the case before ya start .... Then F.F. w. cream o wheat and a wax or other suitable plug.   Good luck      Marty
