Slugs in a Topper? Need suggestions ...
« on: December 20, 2004, 11:20:03 AM »
Got a 12 gauge topper smooth bore for an early Christmas present   .

What kind of slugs would you recommend.  I know the trackers are better for slug guns, but I just can't resist trying.

I was a the local gun shot today and saw some nice slugs by federal with a Barnes slug in a sabot.  Think it'll work or should I stick to forster slugs?

Thnaks guys  :D

foster slugs work best is smooth bore barrels. what choke is your topper? if the consriction is too tight you wont get good accuracy.

Don't waste your money shooting sabots out of a smooth bore gun. The foster type are what you need. Lots of folks like the brenekes. I've killed a couple dozen deer over the years with Win or Rem 2 3/4" 12 ga and 3' 20ga slugs. They don't have the range of the sabots but do the job reliably out to 70 yards. If you want the rifle like performance of sabots send you reciever in for an ultra or tracker barrel.

They will shoot fine through a modified choke.

My 20 ga pardner prefers the winchester foster slug. But you pretty much have to try them all to find what's best in your gun.

My smoothbore likes the Brenneke-Rottwiell MP's the best, one ragged hole at 50 yards. Try them all to see what your gun likes. Research the slugs and shape of them, there is quite a bit of difference in them and they have improved a lot over the last 10-20 years or so from the slugs of old!!!....<><....

:D , Hey Matt, nice to see and hear you around, Merry CHRISTmas to you and yours!!!!....<><....

P.S. - I'd like to stop saying it too but the question keeps being asked!! I do realize however that each gun (and shooter) has his own likes and dislikes...When it comes right down to it, they are just what works for me, even though they are one of the best inexpensive slugs out there for smoothbores!!!  Darn it!, there I go again!!!

Actually I have just tried some of those "Dixie" slugs, the 3" Express 12 gauge. Wow!!!, talk about penetration and power. They were only about $7.50 for 5 and if I ever hunted DANGEROUS game with a shotun that is what I would use. I'll bet they would go right through a big hog end to end!! full diameter, Hard cast at 740 grains and about 1400 fps!!!
I think I might stay with the Brenneke-Rottwiel for deer but I am going to buy more of the Dixies to have "just in case". By the way, I shot them out of my 12 gauge Tracker II and the recoil, although STOUT, was entirely tolerable, of course it was only 5 rounds from the bench, sitting quite upright....<><....

I just bought some winchester superX sulgs at wal-mart @ $5.67 per 15rd box.
I ran them through my 24inch turkey barrel w/modified choke tube.
they shot one ragged hole at 50yards.

I was wondering when someone that didn't sound like an add man to report on those Dixie slugs. They look awsome. I have no real need for them in Delaware but maybe someday I'll get down south for some hog hunting.

My Smoothbore like the 2 3/4 Federal rifle slugs.  I think I paid $2.75 for a box of five at my local gun shop.

I have a stevens 16 ga. smooth bore , 28" barrel  full choke. I use rem sluggers in it.  :-D ( single shot) It's very accurate out to about 45 yds. Got that gun for CHRISTmas when I was 14 yrs old. That gun has killed more game than I care to name. That shotgun will never leave my house. I was just thinking   All my guns are single shots except my win 94 AE 30-30 and my rem 511 bolt action .22. :toast:   Have a great Christmas!
