Filler in light 45-70 loads
« on: December 24, 2004, 11:21:01 AM »
I have several 45-70's and have always loaded for hunting in my Encore
single shot handguns around 1700fps w/ 300gr Hp but, would like to try some lighter loads for plinking ect. I have noticed written in various books, web forums ,ect that with light loads of smokeless powder
(ww231,unique,ect) not to use any type of filler and in others they mention using TP,dacron, cotton ect for filler. Just wondering who does what and any tips to pass on. I can see the reason for a filler and wonder why some say not to use it with smokeless powder. I just picked up a NIB Winchester 1886 EL and would like to try it out soon as the weather here gets above 0 ! Thanks.....

Try using "Accurate 5744" . It's designed for light loads in large cases, with no filler needed. I use 26grs with a 405gr cast in both my browning 1886's. its a pleasant load to shoot.

Here is some data and discussion you should view.  I don't use fillers and have been very satisfied.  My low power accuracy load is 10gr. Titegroup under a Lyman 400gr. bullet in my 22 in. Marlin.  Gives me excellent accuracy and half the kick of a 30-30.  Makes a good target load.  I have no doubt that a 405gr. cast bullet with a flat metplat at 1100fps would kill very nicely as well.  Greg Mushial does not think the filler is needed because of the different kind of ignition the pistol powders use.  Older discussion centered mostly around the faster rifle powders that do give more velocity and may have enhanced accuracy with fillers.  It is not necessary in the loads shown above.  Have fun!

There is serious danger in using filler with some powders, notably, certain fast pistol powders. Use a load that is found in a manual if you must use a filler on a light load.
