What bullet are you shooting in your weatherby 270? Do you reload or use factory weatherby loads? Have you ever tried any of the other factory loads from federal or other mfg's? I have a encore with a vvcg barrel chambered for the weatherby 270, I'm looking for a good factory deer load/bullet, 50 to 100 yard shots. I have been shooting the 140gr ballistic tips that weatherby loads, at 100 yards I can cover 3 shots with a quater. Just need some info on deer ect. that you have shot with this cal. and bullet performance with factory loaded ammo, and entrance and exit size holes.

My buddy has a custom rig in .270Wby---he uses 150gn bullets only----it dropped everything he's ever shot with it--- with no problems at all---black bear--deer---elk---pronghorns etc......

He has dropped stuff at extreme long range with it-----and if you are only looking to shoot 100yds----I'd look to something more senceable----like a .308 or 7mm-08.

I too have a 270 weatherby mag in a weather vanguard VGX and I love it. It is the one rifle that I will never get rid of. It is sad to say that I only have used factory loads in it so far as they are very fast and accurate. But I did get the reloading tools for it. By that I mean powders and bullets. But haven't reloaded yet for it but should this winter.

Its a great round and one that I feel needs premiums bulletts to stuff it with. I just bought some Barnes TSX 140 s to see how they do when I reload this winter. But for shorter range shots like 100 yards or less use the heavier bullets of 150 gr and or permiums like the nosler partition. I use only weatheby ammo and yes expensive but fastest and most accurate ammo out there bar none.

Wea 140gr ballistic tips, prints awesome with this round right out of the box. Went back and bought the rest of the lot from the store.

Only used this rifle/bullet on antelope. Took one antelope at 300yards and another at 350yards (my personal limit) measured after the kill with a laser range finder.

Probably would work well on deer, but I might want something heavier for elk. I have hunted elk, unsuccessfully, with this combination as I felt it was better to thread this bullet exactly where I wanted rather than pull out something bigger which didn't printi well during a test before the hunt.

I loaded Barnes TSX bullets in 140 gr. this year for deer hunting in my .270 WSM and my .270 Weatherby Magnum(although I didnt shoot anything with the Weatherby this year). One of the two bucks I shot was at 121 yards(by my range finder) and it had the same effect on that buck as it did on the one I shot at 273 yards. Both one shot kills with complete penetration leaving an exit wound around 2 - 2.5 across. What more could you ask for? This same bullet has worked extremely well on the three Wild Boars that I have taken with it since I started loading the TSX bullets. I used to use nothing but Nosler Partitions but the TSX lets me use a lighter, flatter shooting bullet that penetrates as well of better than a heavier Partition with better accuracy. My advice is go with the Barnes TSX whether you are using a .270 Win., .270 WSM or a .270 Weatherby Magnum or whatever caliber you are using. Lawdog

Everyone is raving about the barnes tsx bullets. I have seen the nosler partition 160 semi spitzer have devastating for elk in the thick stuff in this caliber. And any 130 grain spitzer will hit them far away for Antelope. Seems for whatever reason anyone who uses this caliber can shoot. A question for lawdog how does the short 270 mag compare to the Weatherby in actual field use?Does it feed as well? How does it handle 150 grain bullets? Anthony

I settled on the 130 gr. TSX for hunting and so far that is all I have tried in the .270 WSM. Going to load some heavier bullets just to compare the two now that big game season is over. I am using 66.7 gr. of H4831 for 3,217 fps. out of my Savage. In my .270 Weatherby I use 75.5 gr. of IMR-7828 for 3,489 fps.. Basically almost 300 fps difference between the two. But remember the Savage has a 24 barrel as compared to the 26 barrel on the Weatherby. The .270 WSM is a bit slower but a bit more accurate. Tell you the truth though I dont believe the animals can tell the difference between the two. All deer/hogs shot have been one shot kills with either. Lawdog

Thank you lawdog for your prompt reply. Seems like the 270WSM is like a 270 win. i used to get just over 3100 fps with my pre 64 fthwt. with 61-62 grains of h4831 and a nosler 130gr. partition. Considering how exspensive ammo for the short win mags is I would stick with the standard calibers.Iwas thinking of getting a featherweight in 7mm short mag but a 280 or 284 seems from what you say its equal. I would love to get my hands ona 270 weatherby someday. Man I seen them work and thet are deadly. The Montana state elk record I know was killed with one, and like I said above they just plain drop critters.
