Barrel Fitting 101...
« on: December 28, 2004, 12:06:59 PM »
I just got done fitting a .270 barrel(thanks Jeff223! :D ) to one of my SB2 frames. This is the first used barrel that I have fitted that didn't fit well, it would not even comes close to locking up. I wrapped a 23/64" drill bit with a piece of fine crocus cloth and used that by hand to work the lug pivot surface until I got good latch engagement, it took about an hour of working and fitting to get it to where I felt it was as good as a factory fitted barrel. I tried to use it chucked up in the drill but it was too hard to keep the tool square to the lug, so I just did it by hand working the bit and crocus back and forth in the lug. There is no light between the barrel and standing breech and it locks up very crisply with no need to slam it shut and there's no wiggle or looseness with the barrel closed or open. I smoked the locking ledge on the barrel and get a nice even lockup imprint, just like I do on the factory fitted barrel for that frame. Now I know!!!

Thanks Fred! The real proof that it worked will be when it works fine at the range and shoots good, too!!!
