Scope mounting questions 54.18...Not really gun specific ?'s
« on: December 29, 2004, 08:23:24 AM »
Man you guys are really boring this time of year! LOL OK, here is my question...

I have a 54.18 w/ a McMillian 1808 stock. I had standard Millet "High" rings on it as this height has allways worked on my hunting rifles, no go, too short, took too much work to contorte (sp?) my head and neck to be able to see through the scope...

How does one go about finding out the perfect height at witch to mount a scope on a particular rifle using a particular hold?

One method I thought up , but haven't tried yet, it to shoulder the rifle with my eyes closed, have a partner hold a measuring tape faceing me on the top of the receiver, and (after opening eyes) read off the number in the center of my view. Repete until have the right numberwith a fair amount of confidence, subtract 1/2" for scope depth and that would be "my" mounting height. ...humm...

Would be nice to try out different rifles with different mounts but I think both guys at my local club that shoot the 1808 stock have mounts that are too low.

I am just looking for a starting point before going and ordering X$ worth of custom height mounts and BKL riser blocks, etc.

Thanks for your input...

George,

There's hardly any point in you throwing more money at a poor old gun that won't ever fit you right.  Just send it to me and I'll send you nice thank you note and we'll all feel better.    Seriously, though, what works for me is to dress in what I'll be shooting in (sleeves, vest, hat, underwear...well you get the picture) and get in my stance and get comfortable with the gun.  Close your eyes and shoulder the gun and snuggle in behind it until you get a good cheek weld and are all tucked in.  Open your eyes and you should be looking where the scope should be setting.  Have one of your shooting buddies (helps to have someone who understands what you are trying to do) hold a ruler on the top of the scope mounting dovetail.  You should be able to see the measurements on the ruler.  This should give you a good idea about scope mount height.....Or you could just guess and order whatever looks coolest from the BKL catalog......Works for me..

When buying rings from Marv we would use blocks of wood as spacers and tape the scope to the action.  worked pretty well.  keep in mind that a higher comb will allow you to use higher rings.

George...

Mr. Imas is absolutely correct.....Simply saw out some 1.0" x 1.5" blocks from a small sheet of 1/2" thick plywood...four should do it...then saw several wooden tounge depressors in half.....now you have your high tech risers blocks....

Next....place your wood blocks on top of your rifle, then your scope on top of the blocks.... and secure with some electrical tape....

To High ?...simply remove some tounge depressors...When you get the right height...measure the total height of your wood risers and there you go....

You can e-mail me at  mpearson@myhome.net  for digital photos of the various mounting systems that I design and build.

Sorry, but I no longer build precision fitted tapered bases for the guys that want to mount their scope with a  $15.00 set of Weavers.
