Barrel length quesion ???
« on: October 17, 2004, 02:18:06 PM »
I was thinking about getting a Remington 870 Express in 16 ga. I think I'm going to get it in 20 ga. instead. My question is what would be better and why, a 26 inch or 28 inch barrel? Is there a difference in performance? Do you get more velocity with the longer barrel? Does one barrel length shoot a better patterns? I'll be hunting grouse, squirrel, rabbit, pheasant and things like that. I'll be shooting a lot of clay pigeons too. I like the shorter barrel but don't really know why you would pick one over the other! Thank's

New York Hunter: there is no difference between 28''or a 26'' in barrel length it is a myth that longer barrels shoot farther and/or harder they however do help with a longer sight plane and smoother swing though for longer shots(45-60yds) I prefer short barrels. So do what makes you happy.

i agree... and i believe that generally a 26" barrel balances better...  don't go shorter than 26" or you'll find yourself ringing your buddy's ears...

I like a 21" or 20" barrel myself. My 870s have a 20" Rifle-sighted one and a 21" Ventilated Rib one.

try out the 26 inch and then a 28 inch for feel of gun..usually shorter people need a shorter gun but nothing below a 26 inch..i would never own a 26 inch in a semi, only 28 inch..in the others you should be shooting a 28 inch or 30 inch..thats what feels good to me.. remember ,you are only adding 2 inchs from 26 to 28 inch.. no weight difference that i can feel..it comes down to what feels good to you and how it looks down barrel..look down a 26 inch barrel and then look down a 28 inch.. big difference..some will say a 26 inch is faster on hunting but how fast do you have to be? i shoot grouse in heavy cover here in pa. in mountains..brush is over my head with laural.you know what barrel i use in a sxw 1000 12 ga semi? 30 inch..not many grouse i can say i missed because of a long barrel in brush.. i use this barrel because it was given to me..my best barrel is 28 inch all around..again ,you have to try the 26 inch out and then the 28 inch but i bet you WILL  not be sorry getting the 28 inch..

as mentioned lenghth of barrel is not an issue if your talkin 2 inches from 26 to 28 unless you get into 21 to23 you either get into slug guns or scatter guns for for grouse hunting or something along them lines but when you get into 26" and up all it is like mentioned is preference and then its just a matter of your swing for instance if you are past shooting geese a longer barrel is gonna be nicer for your swing patten wise in different loads is all about the choke tubes nothing to do with lenghth to an extent.

6 of one half dozen the other on the 26 vs 28" bbl, go with what feels the best for you.  I personally like the 28" bbl since the longer tube helps smooth out my swing and helps put the noise/blast a tad farther away from my ears.

I am a real fan of the 26" because it balances better.  It made my Rem. 11-87 feel like a Beretta or Benelli when I switched to the 26" LC barrel.  I think I would like a 24" or 25" even better.  My gun has a mid bead as well so long range pointing is pretty exact even on the shorter barrel.  The 21-23" range will cause the ears to ring a little bit and you also don't get a full powder burn in some cases.

whatever feels good to you.go and shoot the 26 inch and the 28 inch.thats best way.remember, some of the 26 inch guns have ejection problems do to short barrel and gas on 7/8 shells. beretta even said to go to the 28 inch to get rid of the ejection problems.they say the gas stays in barrel longer and helps eject the lighter shells.i see many 26 inch semis used for sale but very few 28 inch.take care
