castor mound sets.
« on: January 02, 2005, 09:00:34 AM »
Well I've been at the beaver for a week and tried those castor mound sets with 330's under water, snares at the waters edge and #4 dls and a few #3 coils on drowner rigs. I've caught 8 so far and only one of them was in a snare the others were in the foot hold traps and one in a 330 in a run. Went out today and didn't have anything. I think I have pretty much got them all but one that pulled out of a #3 coil. Remade the set with a #4dls, might have it tomorrow if it hasn't left the county. Did have the $#!(( scared out of me trying to get a large beaver that had pulled the anchor out of the water and washiding up under the bank. Took me ten minutes before I could finally get him out where I could get a shot at him. weighed about 50lbs. Worm

Thanks Tom. Got a question for you. How do you long liners get your catch back to the shed? I had 4 yesterday and used a sled to get them the 2 miles back to the car. It about killed me. My 2 girls (five and eight) went with me and made fun of old dad because I was stopping to take breaks all the time. And that was even after i skinned the 50lb'er there at the lake. Of course there isn't a flat section of ground anywhere near where I got my traps set. Worm

Worm,I hate to say this ,but until 4 years ago I would at time carry out close to 200 pounds of beav at one time.
2 stuffed into pack basket and one in each hand. Now I relay them out.I will not skin in the field--leaving carcasses is not an option for me.The leaving of carcasses just trains the bears to feed on beaver,I have had encounters with bears and believe me--it is heart stopping.

Buzz,I doubt that you have more bears than MN.does.Our DNR doesn't know how to control them, they are losing control.@ years ago ,they tried to get hunters to take 2.That didn't work--who wants 2 bear??

Tom, there are so few bear in my area that I have never even seen a track before. Every-now-and-than there is a sighting of a bear and a woman actually shot one a few years ago during deer season. She claimed the bear was charging her, but when they peeled the hide they found all her shots where in the back side of the bear. I dragged the beaver about 60 yards into the brush and covered it up with leaves and such. I want to find out if there are any canines in the area. Something hit it last night, but I think it was a oppossum. Been raining all night so there were no tracks. I talked to a friend of mine and he said he always carried a few sharp knives when he was way back in the brush and didn't want to have to carry them out. The sled I have will easily carry 5 or 6 large beaver, but would work a lot better on snow instead of mud. Worm
