Yesterday I went to my cabin to put my goose hunting trailer under cover.
On my way back I visited a hunting friend of mine who knows this young man in the picture. The deer was taken in the last few days of the 04 season in the same area were my friend and I hunt deer. With some extraordinary luck we could have bagged that buck too.

The non typical buck unofficially scored the 4th highest with what I heard of 268, if that makes any sense. I don't hunt trophies so I don't no about scoring.

We have taken five big bucks this year, with mine being the smallest. Not because I did not have a chance at a bigger one. Alberta and Saskatchewan grows perhaps the biggest Whitetails and Mule Deer in this country. A few years ago I toke a big WT buck that dressed out a 264lbs the estimate by the butcher was that the deer would go 425lbs on the hoof.

We had snow yesterday and there were some big tracks around my cabin.
I never hunt them there, because my wife and I feed the deer and we like to see them close and watch the bucks rubbing their horns on trees.

where do you live in Canada Fred?i have hunted   bear in Ontario and also been in Quebec hunting bear and caribou.never been there hunting deer.i would love to hunt in Alberta for deer some time.i have friends that go there about every year for deer and the bucks they kill are big indeed.a father and son team,friends of mine,went to Alberta and killed two monsters this fall with bow&arrow.this was the first bow kills in this outfitters area.North Dakato hunt planned for me next fall but maybe in two years a big buck hunt in Alberta.moose some day too.to bad a person cant come up there and hunt without an outfitter like they did years back.i can understand though.got to keep that money flowing in the systom

When we talk dressed out, that means no head, no skin. feet. no guts only the carcass ready for processing. The butcher said that the deer dress out about 60% of live weight.

When you take in a carcass they weigh it because you pay by the pound that includes all the bones. You can put any reasonable percentage of live weight on a carcass. I know it toke the farm front-end loader to hang up the deer for skinning the monster and a come-along to put it into the truck.

If the deer dressed out less than 60% say 50% the deer would go over 500lbs live weight. The butcher said that my deer was the heaviest WT he seen for a long time. Big Mule deer bucks go easy over 400 lbs.

Fred,

I go with about the same train of thought as you, in that I don't know much about hunting for trophys.  Mostly I go out, and get a couple does, and am happy for the season.  However, it would take about two deer to equal the size of yours.  Most that I've taken, and seen taken in Ohio are about 120lb. hanging, or about 200ish live weight.  Granted, there are some bruisers that weigh 250-300, but I haven't seen them.  Also, at least here in Ohio, most of the time when people talk about dressed, they mean field dressed(no guts), that's why safetysheriff seemed a little suprised.  Big bodied deer impress me...is there any way that you could post a pic. of the deer you talk about?  Have a good 'un.

P.S. Deer in Ohio also tend to hang at about 60% of their live weight, and processed are about 40% of their live weight.

My biggest deer deer from Maine was a 8 point whose head hangs on my wall now. It dressed out at 201 lbs., it's estimated live weight was just over 300 pounds. We usually figure 30 to 33% lost in the cleaning, however Miane dressed weight is no intestines, no heart, no liver, no lungs but head and feet/legs left on, Every year in Maine some get deer that go over 300 pounds dressed out. Here are a few more WT bucks we got, more or less the normal size. There is one missing with a real nice set of horns, he is hanging up behind these bucks.

It toke some fiddling to get the picture posted. I have some more, after I get that 257 back from the re-bore shop.

Nice! Fred, if you use the () tags on the image URL, the pic will show up within the post. But that pic is too big, so it would need to be edited to reduce the size which can be done at the Photobucket site by using the edit button on each photo after you submit it.
