Cabela's guide hip boots
« on: July 25, 2004, 09:51:27 PM »
Last fall there were some questions here about good hip boots.  My Lacrosse hippers were wearing out and my supplier had dropped them complaining that quality had become variable.

So I tried some Cabela's guide hip boots (NOT ankle fit) with air bob soles that were on sale.  I promised to come back here with a report after really using them.   Overall I like them.  I've made a 5 or 6 trips subsistence fishing (set gill net 3- 6 hrs/ trip ) and another 4-5 trips sport fishing ( 4-6 hrs/ trip) but no heavy duty wading, bush whacking or tundra hiking - that comes in August and Sept.  I can say these boots are comfortable, the velcro knee harness is ok, and I haven't damaged the boots jumping in and out of my old Lund skiff a whole bunch of times.  They seem fairly tough.  The nylon belt straps are sturdy and can't get lost but the plastic buckles can tangle with stuff.  The strong strap and tangling buckles could be a hazard for some uses like commercial fishing, deep water heavy sport gear, fast water areas - I had a buckle catch in the gillnet but luckily yanked it out before I was in trouble.  The nylon inside lining dries nicely.  The air bob soles seem to provide a little better grip than the lug soles on my LaCrosses but they can carry a bigger load of mud, gravel and sand into the boat and can be hard clean off.  Also the soles make hissy squishy sounds on my boat bottom and I'm always wondering what's leaking.  But overall they seem pretty good and were a great buy for the $50 price I paid.  They are definitely better- tougher- than the Cabela's boots I tried about 8 years ago.

Hope this helps folks planning fishing and hunting trips in AK - good luck.

I have the ankle fit model and love them except for getting them on and off.  The ankle fit is too tight and I have to have something to stick my foot in to pull them off.

Otherwise good boots.

I also have the Burly 18".  These I love. Great boots.

I use the Cabela's Neoprene waders with the rubber boot bottom, and the nylon strap around the ankle.  The ankle strap uses velcro in the back for adjustment, and a plastic buckle on the side.  I use orthodics in them due to heel spurs on both feet.  So far I have had no problems with them and they seem to be able to keep my feet warm while submerged all day in the river while floating.  The real test will be in September.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I agree with you fully. Great boots for the money but with the ankle fit there are days after wearing them I wonder if I am going to have to cut them off. They just seem to suck your foot in and not let it go.>John

posted this once but not on this post.  In case someone is interested:
Just when I thought I'd made a real good buy, I found that one ankle on these boots failed - the rubber just gave out.  I'm disappointed.  Now I have to find another pair - I'll be looking for a tougher brand.  I use my boots pretty hard but my old Lacrosses had lasted 5 or 6 years of hard use.

I tried getting hold of Cabela's once with no response.  In all fairness I should try again though I suspect the warranty period on these boots is over. Rats I was getting to really like them.

Used to, 20 years ago, buy a lot of stuff from Cabella's but of late I have found their products are lacking and have sought other sources.
Now, my needs are not as severe as youse guys so the heavier stuff may be better than the light stuff I need.
