Scope Mount For Encore?
« on: December 24, 2004, 04:34:27 AM »
Well Santa's Chief Elf on Staff (that's me) purchased a new Encore ML for me yesterday and says it will arrive under the tree tomorrow. I was wondering which scope mount should I get for this stainless ML barrel? I have seen gaps between the barrel and the front of the base on several guns. Can this be avoided?
This has been talked about before, I'm sure, but I was going to head out and finish shopping for Santa and a scope base in the stocking would be great.
Any help is always appreciated,
Stan

I personally like Warne mounts and rings on my Encores. I use them on all my barrels including my 300 Win Mag. Also Leupold make a great mount and rings.  :D

Hello Redhawk,
Do the brands you mention have the gap between the base and the barrel?
Thanks for the reply,
Stan

There is a slight gap toward the front of the mount, about the last 1/4 inch. But where it bolt on it is flush. This is on the Warne mount.

Seem like all scope bases for the Encore have a slight gap  between the barrel and the base toward the front. Seem to be just the contour of the barrel at that point. I'm using a lowly Weaver base  it too has the gap but it hasn't posed a problem in the 4 years its been on the barrel.

I prefer Leupold mounts and rings on all my Encores.  I believe I ordered them from Natchez Shooters Supply online.  Leupold make gloss blue, matte blue, and matte silver.  They have worked well for me.

Thanks everyone. I knew it was basically a cosmetic issue, but I would prefer a base that had no gap. Stop by one shop today and they were out of Encore bases.
Thanks and Merry Christmas to all,
Stan

Stan

I do not own an Encore but have been reading much about them via this and other forums where owners has discussed the features, issues, performance, problems, etc.

Apparently there is a barrel taper issue with TC factory barrels that results in scope mounts and scope being tilted downward requiring much vertical adjustment of the scope reticle to compensate for the downward tilt.  It has been posted that some scopes do not have enough vertical adjustment and shims have to be placed under the base to achieve a more level mount where less vertical scope adjustment is necessary.

This past weekend I looked at several new Encores and it appeared to me the 209x50 barrel did not have such a taper but the center fire rifle barrels did have a significant taper.  The CF rifle barrels have a very short mounting surface for the scope base itself so the front portion of most bases would extend well forward of that flat mounting surface significantly, thus a gap under the front of the base.

Personally I would like to see a more lengthy, straight/flat, non-tapered section of the barrel where as most, if not all, of the scope base would be supported with little or no gap.  This would surely be a more stable and less problematic mounting arrangement but would add some weight to the gun.

Maybe some others have a better perspective of this situation and will comment.  If not, search this forum and you can find the posts with much discussion about this situation.

Hope this helps,  Dave

If anyone is interested, yesterday I posted an ad in the TC classifieds to sell or trade a Millett steel Encore base and a couple of sets of Burris Zee rings for that base.

On the heavy barrel centerfires that base does not seem to have that front gap.  Haven't pulled out my 209x50 barrel to check that, but I have the Weaver/TC bases on all the rifle Encore barrels I have and I don't really mind the slight gap at the front.

I second that! Warne steel base and rings are on my .50 Encore barrel. The TC aluminum base is on the .45 barrel. Both have a very small gap  at end of base, if anything that should give you more vertical room on your scope. I ran out of room on the Leupold VXII on the .45, but doesn't seem to matter on the .50 cal. Thats the scope though wasn't a problem with the Tasco SilverAntler.

Perhaps Vapour will check the board and chime in...he knows exactly which rings you need to get in order to get back the vertical adjustment in your scope.  With normal rings, you will use almost all of it to zero the rifle.
As others have said, the gap is normal and created by the barrel contour problem.  I would like to see T/C fix this in newer barrels but they don't appear inclined to do anything about it.  The Omega has no gap, but also uses almost all vertical adjustment up.  I had to ship mine with soda can pieces.

Thanks for all the help guys! I opted to take the gun to my smith for some trigger work. It is much better, but not great. That is a whole different subject though.
Hopefully I won't have to shim the base. I have ran into this problem before as well, with a pistol scope on a Contender barrel.
I agree with the others and feel that TC has gotten too big now and is loosing that quality for the mighty profit. They have heard the complaints I'm sure, excessive trigger pull, scope base gap, crud ring, run out on scope adjustments and many more. The commercials look good and I'm sure the sales are up. Next thing you know they will be making them overseas to get more profit. Let's hope not.
I have had good look with customer service though. Maybe I'm lucky. I do like the break open design ML. Hopefully I will get chance to see how accurate it is in the next week or so. Got to have something to do since deer season has gone.
Thanks again,
Stan

With all the barrels I have and had, I have never had to shim any mount.  :D

Stan:

I don't feel like the scope base gap is a quality issue.  The reason that there is a gap is that some scope bases (like the Warne bases that I use)are longer than the flat surface area on the barrel.  This is not a factor on bull barrel Encore barrels, only on tapered barrels.

Think about this...If you were mounting a scope on a Remington 700 on the barrel instead of the receiver you would have this same issue.  It would be hard to mount a scope on the receiver of the Encore.   :)

If you don't like the gap between the barrel and the scope base use a shorter base like the Burris dual dovetail base.  Problem solved.

HTH,

X

Great idea x-caliber, or even cut back the Weaver mount, so it is not so long if you do not like it.  :D

I put Leopold QR bases and rings on my Omega, and they have worked out great. I think the Encore and the Omega use the same bases.
