204 Barrel Length
« on: December 30, 2004, 07:55:42 PM »
:-D  Just got a .204 Ruger barrel for my Ultra. Like most of you I was a little disappointed that it came only in 22 inches. However, after doing a little searching on the web, I found a site that showed a comparison of barrel length vs velocity for the 204. The site is www.bullberry.com/204Rugerdata.  Check it out .

After looking at the data, it appears that the 24" fluted barrel on the new .204 Ultra should be about as close to optimum as we are gonna get in an H&R rifle, although the 22" barrel isn't far off the mark either.

Well that changes my opinion a lot.  I though NEF was nuts to not offer this in 26" I mean that is what it was designed for.

While it might be a bit faster with 26"  The difference in the 22 vs. 24 is well it ain't squat!  Still won't be buying one just don't need it.  I have a hornet and a 223 not much I need a 204 for as I don't get time to use all I have at this moment and a 500 will be my next NEF investment.

However, this data does make me now think NEF did ok in comming out with a 22" 204.  I still don't get why they did not use the 25-06 blanks to make it as they are 26" but hell 4000 FPS is fast enough don't you think?

Just a guess here but I don't think the 22-250 would do as well in the same test.
