I had a 35 Remington unported and still have a 45-70 un ported. The recoil of the 45-70 is much greater. In a way, it hurts a bit whereas the 35 had a heavy recoil, but wasn't too painful.

It is hard to describe such a feeling over print. If possible, I would see if I could go to a range and try both.

I have had people shoot my 45-70 un-ported and never want another shot. But they weren'ty accomplished handgunners either.

I have fired the .35 Remington and the .45-70 extensively, and also a .300 Savage (which is slightly less potent than the .309 JDJ).  Here is how I would subjectively rank them in 14-15" Contender barrels with 4x Leupolds and Pachmayr rubber mounted:

1) .300 Savage - 150gr @ 2400 fps
2) .35 Remington - 180gr @ 2100 fps
(The above two are close - there is a large gap between them and below)
3) .45-70 - 350gr @ 1400 fps

Things change when bullet weights are changed, and a .300 Savage loaded with 180s versus a .35 loaded with 150s would swap their places.  IMO, nothing will dismount the .45-70 as the heaviest recoiler as long as near-full power loads are used.
