First kill with Ruger Bisley
« on: December 22, 2004, 07:43:45 AM »
I bought a Ruger Bisley this summer. I had the bbl. cut down to 51/2", Bowen Rough Country rear sight, Weigan Combat DX front sight (interchangeable blades), Grip frame round butted and grips slimed, and action job. The gun shoots great. I killed  a doe with it on Sat. @ 35 yds. The load was 27 grs. of H-110 with a 250 gr. XTP @ 1180 fps. I shot the deer in the neck and it hit the ground instantly (would't turn broadside). This was my first deer with that particular pistol. It won't be my last. Love that 45 Colt.

Congradulations. I have killed deer with the TC but never a revolver. I am itching to do so.

Way to go John! Nothing like that first deer with a six shooter. I also shot my first deer with a Ruger 44 same distance, same shot placement, and same results.

Did you report that load correctly?  My Hornady manual shows a maximum load of 24.8 gr. for a 240 gr. XTP in a 44 mag.  That give you 1400 fps out of a 7" barrel.  Even the T/C shows a maximun load of 25.9 gr. for that dust.

OK. I see that it was a 45 Colt, I shudda read more carefully.  My Hornady manual does not even give an H110 load for the 250 gr. bullet, but I can't imagine that 27 grains is right.  Can you enlighten me on this matter, I've just acquired a Vaquero in 45 Colt and I'm looking at appropriate loads for a 3.5" barrel.

Dusty

In  Ken Waters Pet Loads he lists loads for Ruger Blackhawks and TC Contenders.  He has one load listed for a 250 gr SWC with 296 powder (same as H110).  He gives 21.0 gr as a MAX load with this bullet.
With a 225 JHP he gives 24.0 gr as a MAX with the 296 powder.

In my NRA Handloading book, they give 20.0 gr H110 with a 260 gr HP.  Again this load is for strong guns like the Rugers and T/C's only.

I couldn't find H110 or W296 used in the 45 Colt in any of my other references.

Way To Go John
I used the Sierra data with my .45 Vaquero which was 1,150fps using 21.6gr 296 & 250gr XTP. Results on my deer were like yours.
I think this data maxed out @ 25.0gr & around 1,300fps

Sierra lists 23.7 grains of H110 as maximum with their 240-grain .45 Colt bullet, and 25 grains of W296 with the same bullet.  Speer lists 21.0 grains of H110 as maximum with their 250-grain GD bullet.  Hornady lists 24.8 grains with their 250XTP bullet as maximum in the high pressure .45 Win Mag.  H110/W296 is still a good powder for heavy .45LC loads, but 27 grains is very high indeed.

ive run as high as 25 in my .45 rugers but basically shot one vaquero loose with that load. Max for me now is 23 in a .45 and 21 in a .44 with 300s You can get away with 27 with a 240 in a blackhawk or redhawk. But your gaining very little in performance and beating up a good gun.

That 27 gr. load came from John Linebaugh. It is supposed to run 30,000 cup pressure. I will admit there was little increase in velocity from 26 grs. to 27 grs. I also think I may have a slow can of H-110. The velocity on that load is only 1180 fps. and it it supposed to do about 1350. Any thoughts?
