I am getting closer to buying my equipment and started to think where do I want to set up?  In a bed room, basement, and such.  Thought the powder if spilled might be tough to get out of the carpet, and safety in the basement because the open area is next to the furnace and water heater.  Cold in the winter here so the garage is out.

So where did you guys setup and what are your suggestions?

Where ever you set up leave room for expansion. You always start out small, but end up with a bunch of "cool tools".  

My first setup was in a basement the heaters aren't a problem unless you are right next to them.

My setup now is in my office that is carpetted. Any powder spillage is mostly on the table (I use an old dining room table) and only a small amount falls on the floor. I use a vacuum cleaner to clean the carpet just like any of the carpets.

I keep the powder in a seperate area of the house so I only have one powder in the reloading area at a time. You want an area where you won't be distracted, but not so much that you become a stranger to the family.

I have a small room in the basement dedicated to reloading, its about 7'x8'.  If you think the space out wisely, its an ok area. If you are some crazy person with 5 presses, 6 powder measures, 3 cabinets, 2 bookshelves, a 10' workbench and a desk... you are in deep trouble. This previous description is purely fictional, if anyone thinks i was talking about them, its purely coincidence  :D

Static electricity is generated in a vacuum cleaner and the powder can be ignighted when the electricity is discharged. Powder should never be vacuumed up!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't use a sweeper to cleanup powder either.  But then again, show me a study where smokeless is ignited by normal static. Unstable old smokeless could be a problem.  Blackpowder and static is a huge problem on the other hand. I know someone who blewup his small gunshop with blackpowder in that manner. It killed him and hurt 2 other people while pouring blackpowder from an old keg into a plastic trash can.

I'm not talking about vacuuming up a lb. of powder. If you spill more than a very small amount on the carpet then you are too uncoordinated to be loading. If you are concerned about vacuuming up a few grains of powder then put down a covering over your carpeted work area before using the powder.

I'd be more concerned about vaccuuming up a dropped primer. Or worse yet,your wife or girlfriend doing so! It may or may not hurt the vaccuum but believe me(I know from experience) the repercussion(s) will resonate for a VERY long time!    :eek:  :lol:

Best advice I can give you, is to locate your "room"(it needs a locked door) somewhere your wife won't be temped to "clean". Mine did once and it was as close as we've come to a divorce. I was seeing red, really, and roaring about her ancesters clear back to the 3rd century. I had stuff I never did find and not all of it was mine. So you know how that goes, it was 28 years ago and I still hear about it(no they never forget). But she dosen't enter my room unless I'm there either. LOCK THE DOOR!!!!
