Model 70 serial number

My brother just purchased a Model 70 in 270 Weatherby Magnum with a Boss, serial number G129337. Can someone help us find the year it was made?

The boss attachment didn't come out until the mid 1990's and I'm pretty sure winchester didn't chamber the 257 weatherby until that time frame.  I'd bet the barn and the buick it's a mid 1990's rifle, 1970's is highly unlikely.

  The serial # given indicates that Win, model-70 was manufactured between 1976-77.   
   As Winchester made many different versions of the Model 70 maybe the original poster can fill in that blank.

                  I have followed this thread with interest.  I just purchased a used M70 left hand in 7MM.   I had purchased a new in the box, 300WSM, and a 30-06 within the last 2 yrs, and was less than satisfied with the overall workmanship.  Both guns were traded.    A local smith called me about the used gun.   Taking the action out and looking at the hidden machining, and inletting was a tell tale sign of when these guns got the attention they deserved.   Needless to say, I am happy with my decision as the metal and wood are 99%+.     It had the older 2 pc bottom metal, and there is a small set screw on the bolt shroud.     The serial number is G173447.   I have looked at the Arms Collectors web site, and was unsuccessful in finding the year of production.  Their search would not accept any serial number with a letter in it.  Any help would be gratefull.          Thank you,   Curly

  The s/n you gave G-173447 is not shown. I`m sure it`s good but the Year of manufacture charts available end
    at a lower number, at least the ones i look at do.
    That being said, yours is a POST 1981 for sure. 
   Maybe some other  poster  will come up with an "on the money" date.

Thank you Savage .250.    I am fairly sure that it was probably in the late 80's to 90's.   The finish work on both the wood and metal is so much nicer than the 05' and 06' models that I had.  I was curious if any of the Winny people know when they started using the 1 piece bottom metal, and when they eliminated the small set screw on the bolt shroud.   This may help me narrow down the age.

JW/OK,
It is often helpful to describe the exact model of a "Model 70", in order to judge when they were made, for Model 70's manufactured after 1991.  Your rifle is probably a blued Classic Sporter.  This model was manufactured with the "Boss" from 1995-1998, however this model was only made one year with the "Boss" and in 270 Weatherby, 1996.  If your rifle is a Classic Stainless, this model was manufactured with "Boss" and in 270 Weatherby only in 1997.  This would gibe with your serial number, based on other Model 70's I own from that time period.  Hope this helps!   ;D

Since your Model 70 is a leftie, that might make it a bit tougher to answer your questions.  But, based on your serial number, 1997 is no doubt pretty close for the year of manufacture, and apparently 1997 was the first year of manufacture for left-hand Classic actions as well.  In right-hand actions, the stop screw on the bolt shroud disappeared some time after 1996, but apparently before 1999.  The bolt shroud without the stop screw was probably phased in over a period of time anyway, and may well depend on the model just when they were phased in.  The flanged bolt shroud started to appear in 2003 on right-hand models anyway, but I have seen a stainless Classic that I believe to be of 2002 production with the flanged bolt shroud.  On the other hand, I have seen left-hand Model 70's that were very late production, probably 2005, that didn't have the flanged bolt shroud.

In rack grade Model 70's, the first model to have the one-piece bottom metal, that I am aware of, was the Ultimate Shadow, introduced in 2003.  Some models never did get the one-piece bottom metal.  The Classic Stainless model had two-piece bottom metal all the way to the the bitter end, I suppose because the inletting is different for the one-piece bottom metal, and USRAC continued to use the same old stocks, which were inletted for the two-piece bottom metal.   :)

I'm also having a hard time finding the date of manufacture of my Mod 70 featherweight ser# G2015xxx. It is a .270win.
