1886 Extra Light / 45-70
« on: December 19, 2004, 10:26:31 AM »
I just added a Winchester reissue of Model 1886 in 45-70.                    Its the extra light version but ,still seems a pound or so heavier than my Marlin 45-70 CB.  Does anyone have any experiance with this model and can pass on any tips?  I got it new in the box and I know its 1 0f 3500 they made but will be a shooter for me. Thanks.............

Iowahunter, I bought my first 1886 EL three yrs ago, mostly to take the weight off my 1915 vintage original. It is a truly well made gun and a delight to shoot. In fact, it so impressed me that 2 more have been added to the safe. I intend to use them for future conversion to 50 EX and .45-90 WCF.
The first thing I did was to add a Lyman receiver sight, remove the factory semi-buckhorn and use a filler block to cover the slot. The gun is now a deadly accurate little beast. I haven't added a recoil pad, but intend to, one of these days.
The more you shoot your '86, the fonder you will become of it. :D
I get my kicks from an 1886.

86er is right on the money about these rifles. I only have one, but made the same changes to it that 86er did his. I love it and got it to use as a shooter. I also added a sling swivel stud and a magazine band so I can use a sling for hunting. I traded my Marlin Guide Gun in on it, but as much as I liked the Marlin, the 1886 EL has real class. 8)

I picked up a 1886 EL from CDNN Investments a couple years ago.  After a 12 year break from hunting, I resumed the deer hunting endeavors this year.  In preparation, I opened the safe to find that I had sold my old hunting rifle and reached for the 1886 instead.  Nice rifle!  My las range practice before heading to the woods produced a 3-shot group of about 1-1/4" at 50 yards offhand (sitting supported).  I'm using 405gr LFN hard cast bullets over 5744 powder (max book charge for 1600fps).  The rifles steel buttplate reminds you when its not tucked tightly into your shoulder!  Great shooter and my dedicated thick woods rifle.

I was at Cabelas yesterday in Prarie Duchien and asked if they had any 1886's and he checked and they showed 1 on the computer, A NIB GR 1 for $900 ser# 4xx . I asked to look at it and he went found it for me and it had 1 tiny mark on the forearm that they said they would knock off the price some. We haggled abit and now it sits in my vault : )  I don't think I stole it but, I feel I got a fair price.  Santa came abit late this yr or maybe way to early for next yr!

CDNN Investments still has both grades of Winchester 1886 Extra Lights available according to their last catalog.  Don't quote me, but I believe they were priced at $699 and $999.

Their last catalog showed both the standard and high grade Winchester 1886 Extra Lights.  If I remember correctly, the prices were $699 and $999, respectively.  They were very nice to deal with on my 86 EL.  My dealer already had an FFL onfile, so they shipped it the day I ordered.

How do you get CDNN's gun catalog?   I signed up on their website for email ect.. but all I get is pistol mag offers and such.   I traded in my 45-90 Sharps on the 1886 and got more than I had into it in trade so I'm into this 1886EL for $775 or so.   By the time I would order from CdNN with shipping/FFL and taxes I would be in about the same price range.
Thanks..
