.458wm hardcast and aa8700?
« on: January 03, 2005, 07:18:12 AM »
Hello everyone, I am just getting started as a new member. I have been watching to see how things are handled here.
I have been shooting a CZ .458 win mag for a while now, 465 Saeco fngc with full loads of H-335, I have tried reduced loads with XMP-5744 but they are too dirty. Has anybody tried loads with 8700, AA says this has proven useful with many cast bulet loads, but nothing is really said about which ones. I am really looking for the one powder that will give good accuracy with both reduced and full power loads.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Halfbreed

AA 8700

I have tried this powder in the 30-06 with 200 grainers heavily compressed and still get unburned powder sometimes.  Great accuracy though.  The 06 has a much lower "expansion ratio" than the 458 and I would think unless you used a magnum primer, heavy crimp, heavy compression, etc. 8700 would literally dribble out of the end of the barrel.  You can email or call their tech dept for an opinion though. They are usually pretty friendly and helpful.  I don't have the address, but I think it is on their website.  www.accuratepowder.com

Captain Kirk, thanks for the reply, I have contacted AA tech staff, so far I have not heard anything back. I was afraid of that 8700 just dribbling out of the bbl. I guess I will just have to work up 2 differant powders. Thanks Halfbreed

8700 in the .458WinMag

65 grains of 8700 and Lyman 457125-520 grain plain base slug shoots great in my .458WinMag. Recoil is about half of factory fodder. There is usually some unburned powder but it doesn't cause any problem. Magnum primers reduce this considerably. The cost is nearly free which means I get to shoot it as much as I like. I cast the boolets from wheel weight alloy and water drop harden. I size to .459 and use LBT "blue" lubricant. I usually use a card wad under cast bullets to keep lubricant away from powder if the ammo gets hot (I live in Florida) Great fun, accurate, and a real mule-deer and elk slammer.

curator, do you know what the velocity is with this load, and is there a referance to this load? I am getting the Lyman cast bullet handbook soon. Thanks Halfbreed

I purchased some AA8700 in the late 80's for use in my .460 WM.  Even compressed loads gave me sooty case necks.  I called AA to inquire about their loading data and they advised me that I could not get enough powder in the puny .460 case to cause any pressure problems.  At the time, it was Israeli surplus .50 Browning powder.  It was $4/lb at the time.  Bob

IMR-4895?

I have been using 49-50gr of 4895 with an RCBS 500gr cast.  This should give about 1400fps.  It will shoot into one ragged hole at 50yds and into less than 2" at 100yds.

4895 should make a decent powder for full power loads.
