I'd like to know if anybody here has had a 1911 hard chromed and if so what kind of experience you've had, positive or negative, as a result of that treatment.

I have a Bob Chowed hard crome that is over 40 years old and in excellent shape.

I used to build custom 1911s and had them all hard chromed at Accurate Plating and Weaponry over near Clearwater, FL.  My current favorite carry guns are a LW Commander and a custom BHP, both done by AP&W.  They also did my 4" M-29.
Their work has been top-notch and turnaround time is only 2-3 weeks.

I checked out APW's website and that's where I'm going to send my Colt Commander.  I'd previously looked at Metaloy but APW looks more professional to me.  They charge more but I'm one of them "ya gets what ya pays for" kind of guys.

To add to this question, can a blued gun be refinished with hard chrome? I have a 1911 that I would like in chrome. I know bullseye shooters who have had their guns chromed and it not only looks good but is durable on these heavily used guns.

APW sez they'll strip off the bluing at no extra charge but they do charge for stripping off other finishes.
