On page 17 of Midway's Master Catalogue #3 there is shown a gadget made by Forrester called the "Universal Hollow Pointer". This item is used to drill out the end of a cast bullet and thereby make it into a hollow point. I'm wondering if anybody here has used it and can give me some information about the performance of the bullets.

Dusty, the "Universal Hollow Pointer" has been around for years and the folks that I know that have used them have had good luck with them.

An 11/64th's drill bit fits perfectly in a Forester trimmer. The pilot shafts are within a few thousands of the drill bit and it works perfectly for hollow pointing cast bullet rounds. I ground mine down due to the drill bit length being just a little too long for rifle rounds.

Ain't sure what this picture will look like!! It is a Forster Hollow Pointer for the 357 Magnum. I purchased it many, many years ago when I experimented with swaged bullets. It worked just so-so. Now that I cast my own bullets, I got it out yesterday and hollow-pointed some 358429's to try. It is labor intensive but a hand held electric screwdriver helps solve some of those chores. The drill bit (inside of the die shown) quickly fills with lead and needs cleaned. A small screwdriver will peel the lead from the bit. I really don't remember if the hollow pointed bullets performed any better or not. I might give it a try later this Spring as weather permits. Good-luck...BCB

Thanks! Gotta have one! The late, great Al Goerg used to market one during the early 1960s. I'm glad the idea still persists. he recommended using it with relatively soft lead because brittle lead fragments. It seems to me his favorite diameter for .44 magnum was 1/8 or 3/16 inches. He also had a favorite depth, but I can't recall what it was at all.

From what I have read, 1/8" seems to be the recommended depth. I have gone deeper, but not having done much experimenting, I really don't know if it helps. If one goes too deep, the integrity of the bullet will most certainly be compromised. It could even get dangerous as it may let part of the bullet in the barrel if the charge shoots through the bullet. Kind of like the hollow base bullets. Don't really know. Still they are labor intensive and very annoying to clean the lead from the drill bit. Good-luck...BCB
