500 S&W?
« on: January 04, 2005, 04:33:07 AM »
Lately there has been quite a bit of talk about the handi in 500 S&W. Lacking balistic info on this caliber, how would a Handi with a 22 inch barrel stack up against the 45-70 Handi?Would there be a practicle difference in performance on Big game between the two? If so which would have the edge. I can't seem to find much info on the 500 S&W with a rifle length barrel. How about if you throw the 450 Marlin into the mix?
shot placement is everything.

I emailed Wild West Guns to get some ballistics for their 500 lever gun, they replied that they don't have one available yet and they will send the data when they produce the rifle which is still in production and they're closed at the time. There's another thread or 2 on the .45-70 vs .500 S&W subject here, one current and a couple a month or so old if you want to do a search for em.

I quess I was not paying attention to the other posts on this subject. Wandering mind :? . I have thought about the 500 S&W but I have three 45-70's now and I don't see any gain with the 500 S&W. I don't argue that it would be a nice addition to the line.

I originally thought it would be a good platform for a rechamber to .50 Alaskan or .50-110, but apparently there is a bore diameter issue from a couple poster comments.
