Which to buy Which to buy
« on: January 04, 2005, 11:08:05 AM »
I have a T/C Hawken, but I want to upgrade to a gun with a slower twist for patch and ball.
I'm down to two options; Austin& hallek Mountain rifle or a Lyman Great Plains rifle in .50 or .54cal.
 Based on a lack of information, My question to all of you is Looks aside which has the best performance history?  I thinking some shooting for fun in the spring and summer then deer and elk hunting in the fall. Any opinions or advice will be taken seriously and greatly appreciated.

Unless you just want a completely separate rifle...some options:

One option is to just call TC's Fox Ridge company and buy a .50 or .54cal TC Hawken 1:66" round ball barrel for your existing Hawken stock;
(1-800-243-4570)

Another option is to call Green Mountain and buy one of their TC Hawken "drop-in" barrels;

I have several TC 1:66" round ball barrels and a couple GM barrels...all excellent.

(Claims that 1:48" twists won't shoot PRBs accurately are old wives tales!!)

splatman32: I would think you have a 50 cal. t/c and you want to up grade to a 54 RB barrel. I have to go along with round ball he hit the nail on the head.,GM barrel would be the way to fly.I have read a couple of reviews on guy that own the A@H ,never shot one or handle one ,but another member on the forum said who waited for a A@H was not all that joy with his reviews.I think the A@H is made in spain .I also had the GPR nice gun shot great my problem was the gun was a little to heavy for stalking all day hunt in the woods.I would check out Midsouth for the best prices on the GPR. :D

Welcome to ya splat,,and good luck.
 Best advise,, is to study the archives of this sight and that of any/many others. Overwelmingly you'll find the GPR as the faverd firearm. Many and varied are the opinion,,,,,,,,,
 roundball is right,,if the T/C fit's you well and you enjoy shooting it, that may well be the best arm for you,, Barrel change options are available for that arm almost a "dime a dozen"". So hunt around,,cruise,,ask alot,,and get answers,,,
 personal opine?,,I have never seen (but once!) a t/c or gp lyman be top shooter..top ten,,top five even..But never a top shooter! The stocks wrong. Don't fit right.
 So.,,go for fit, feel, and comfort. T do that, ya gotta shoulder the arm,,,,
luck to ya,,,
i'm a realist. i've not seen it all, but man ,,I've Been Around the block once or twice

:D You have to do what it is that makes you and only you happy.  If it was me......I would take the Lyman in .54.  I have a couple of them,and have no problems carring it around all day for several days.  Is it the best shooter out there....Nope...........but..........it is far,far from the worst......at 50 yards,1.5 inch on average for a group with a rb.........plenty of punch for an Elk,and does great on whitetail.  I have Peeps on mine from Lyman so I can get a litle finer sight picture,along with a hooded pin sight inna front.  Stay safe...King
THE ONLY FEMALE THAT I TRUST IS A LABRADOR.......AND SHE DONT SNOORE,AND DONT COMPLAIN ABOUT MY COOKING...THE ONLY GODS THAT EXIST ARE THOSE THAT HAVE ONE IN THE CHAMBER,AND 19 IN THE MAG.......

I would have to side with those recomending the GPR's.  I have one in .50 caliber percussion, along with a Deer Creek .54, H&A .45 and CVA .50 flint.  I shoot the GPR almost exclusively.  I have dumped a couple of deer with it but use it mostly for rendezvous compitition.  The best that I have done on paper with it off the bench has been 1 3/4 inches at 100 yards.  This was with the factory buckhorn rear sight.  Last spring I won the "Long Gong" shoot with it.  The gong was the top three feet of an oxygen cylinder hanging at 175 yards, by GPS measurement.  I made 4 hits out of five offhand shots.  For the money, I'd go with the Lyman.
Thanks,
Trapper Jack

if you like the gun you have id get the barrel replacement if available..  and like all other things when you find out what you really like in ignition type, propellent, and projectile, gun style,buy a quality custom gun made by a well known maker.  but until you know exactly what you want in a market of many types of guns, id not get into to much money..   i belive most muzzeloaders are gravitating towards a flintlock in the long run, but this may not be the case with you.  dave.....
