How to lube when neck sizing ???
« on: January 03, 2005, 11:25:16 AM »
I'm a bit confused regarding Neck sizing a case using a full length sizing die...  can I get away with using mica on the neck only, or do I need to roll the cases across the pad first ?

A related question would be would a dedicated neck sizing die be an advantage?

Thanks !!!

It would depend on your chamber size. If you have a fairly tight chamber you could get away with partly sizeing the necks useing mica, but if it`s on the large size you won`t. I prefer useing nick size only dies, but have done it with a FL die by setting the die up alittle.

Isn't it true that if you neck resize only, you are not able to use the cartridge in a different rifle than the one that originally fired the round?

By and large yes.  Technically you could use it in the original rifle or any other rifle whose chamber was larger in all areas (ie, loser tolerances), but there we're talking more about an exception than the rule.

The benefit though is much longer case life.  I personally neck size only form my 6.5x55 but FL resize for all other cartridges I load for (.30-06, .303 British, 7.5x55 Swiss).

I do partial fl resize

A' La Ken Waters,  I like to partially full length resize, especially my 30-30 and 300 win Mag.  I do this be raising a FL size die about 1/2 to 1 turn off the shell holder.

I use Hornady white lube in a tub applied with fingers to upper 2/3 of case after inside/outside lubing the necks with Imperial neck size graphite applied with a Bonanza powdered lube kit.  It has places for 3 nylon case neck brushes that stand in a little container for the graphite.  Push the case down over the brush and into the graphite then pull up and off.  A fine layer of graphite is on the in and out sides of the neck.  I've tried the mica and Midway's case neck lube set up that's real similar to the Bonanza, but bigger.  I don't like the mica or Midway luber as much.

After sizing wipe off all lube with paper towel.

I neck size using neck size dies and dip the neck in Mica.  Works fine.
