45-70 barrel trashing brass

I recently bought a used 45-70 barrel, and after my first trip to the range I realized it was putting two dings in each case.  Examining the barrel, I found two spots where it looks like the screw holes for the scope mount were drilled all the way into the chamber.  Didn't notice them when I bought it.

Aside from being annoying, is this thing safe?  I absolutely love shooting this thing, I've already fired 20 Win SuperX 300 grain bullets through it, bought those waiting for my dies to arrive.  But now I'm worried that two holes into the chamber might be a weak point waiting to split.  

Plus I'm not sure if the distinctive dings on the brass are going become weak spots down the road, so I thought I'd stop now and start asking for advice.  Am I just being paranoid?

Get that thing to a gunsmith! If your asumptions are right then youve prolly got a time-bomb ticking there. A good "smith" can inspect the barrel and tell you if anything is amis with the chamber.

  Take a good look at how deep the scope base mounting holes are drilled.  I don't know if that is what caused it to blow or not.  I would stop shooting your barrel and get it checked out.  Lone Hunter

If you look at the 444 markings on that barrel you can tell it's some ones basement 44mag re-chamber job. I wouldn't trust one of those for nothin. In my opinion that was caused by either a barrel obstruction, or some ones hot reload. Which should never have been used in a contender! I never could figure out why some one would push their contender to the edge like that.  KN

Okay, I'm convinced!  Even if that split TC was something besides the holes, I'm getting this thing checked out!  Thanks for the suggestion to send it to TC, don't know why I hadn't thought of that.

The 444 Marlin and the 45 /70 are pushing pretty hard on the limits of the Contender.  If the screws are going all the way threw it has to be weakening that camber.  The blown barrel just goes to show what could happen.  Lone Hunter
