Savage 219
« on: January 15, 2005, 04:07:52 AM »
I've gone through all the posts here and read some interesting dialog about these rifles. I purchased one in what was supose to be a 25/20 and it came with another forearm and 20 gauge barrel for a measly $150. The rifle barrel was rechambered to 25/35 but it's still going to be fun playing with it. Is there any more 219 owners here since the last postings?

The 25-20s are a rare item in the Savage 219 and it would be a shame to rechamber one.  I had a Mod. 219 in 25-35 (and a 20 ga barrel and fore end as well) until last summer when I finally sold it.  Mine was originally a 30-30 that I had sleeved to 25 cal and rechambered.  Had problems with the brass stretching and/or extraction problems which I never did solve.  Cartridges loaded on new brass extracted OK but reloaded brass would not extract without a cleaning rod.  It did shoot well with 75 gr hollow points and I had alot of hope for this rifle but it didn't work out.  The 20 ga was delightful to shoot and I had chokes installed.  I have only seen one original 25-20 in this model and it was out of my budget.  Good luck.

Hey 2520, I read all your replies on the 219 and about the one you seen at a show for $500. I had hopes that it was a 25/20 but when I broke it open, I knew it had been rechambered. Still, $150 for both the gun and an extra barrel is a good deal if you ask me. I should get my dies in a day or so and begin to experiment. My area has tremendous history(Gettysburg) and the guns that surface will sometime knock your socks off. I'll keep my eyes open for another one. I got a minty Savage Model 23 in 32/20 for $185 a few years back so I know the guns are still out there. I'll let you know what kind of results I get. Did you unload all your reloading supplies for the 25/35??

Everything went including 200 new brass, Hornady dies, and a new striker for the 219.  Still see a few at the shows mostly in 30-30 in the $300.00 range.  At one time I had shotgun barrels for 12, 16, and 20 gauge. Nice wood on the one I sold.  Good luck.

I have a Savage 219L...it has a little side-lever on the right hand side of the rifle.
This one is a .22 Hornet...I may try it on yotes...

I have had it since 1965..I bought it as a GI while in Germany., nice piece, and it's not overly long, even with the 26" barrel.

I am considering cutting it to about 20" and have it recrowned...

Ironglow, they are darn nice little rifles. Mine is the older one with the top lever. I wish it was drilled and tapped from the factory or groved for a scope mount. I made up some cases and fire formed 4 of them already and the chamber seems to be cut quite nicely. I am really pleased with it and am going to be on the hunt for a 25-20 and perhaps a 30-30 barrel.

Yup; they are nice, although the 219L has a grooved barrel for scope mount...I actually think the older model (219) has cleaner, more pleasing lines.

ive got one in 22 hornet, it defies almost every accuracy law known to shooters!!!   the barrel appears to be bent where someone sweated on a sling mount, bore is pitted badly, crown is fair. shoots about 3/4 inch five shot groups consistently at 100 yds.  DEADLY on p-dogs!  dont think id trade it for any new one. :)

If anyone has any of these they would want to sell, I would be greatly interested! I am collecting these to get a set of all the calibers and shotgun gauges for my three boys. I have 2-28ga's 2-20ga's 1-410 1-16ga 2-12ga's and 1-22hornet. I need three of each and I am lined up on one 25-20. If anyone knows where I may be able to pick up one of any of these, please let me know! I always check Gun Broker, Auction Arms, and Guns America. And have 6 Wanted ads on here in different forums.
It's been hard filling my collection, hope to get somewhere here!

I own a 219 in the  22 Hornet. Took a coyote with it last winter . My Dad bought it when he came back from WWII .   My question is... when I break it open the firing pin goes off as if the trigger has been pulled. When I press the level to the right again the firing pin stays stays in place until I close the action and fire the gun.  A gunsmith told me that the way it was made it could not fire unless I pulled the trigger. When I press the lever as far as it can go to the right when I break it open it is ok. If I understand it correctly by pressing the lever to the right it cocks the rifle and breaks it open at the same time.  Hope this makes since .  Thank You

Beeg:  I think what you hear is the automatic ejector kicking off not the firing pin.  If you remove the stock you can see the entire firing mechanism.  There are 2 kinds; one uses a hammer the other a striker.  When the action is opened the rifle is cocked and the safty engaged.  The lever stays or should stay all the way to the right until the action is closed.  You can't cock it twice.  The ejector is on the barrel and it cocks at the same time.  With the stock off you can observe what is happening when the action is opened.  Hope this helps.
PS to all the barrel collectors:  I wish you well.  I tried for many years and could not get them all.  My last 219 was a 30-30 that I relined and chambered to 25-35.  Had a 20 ga. barrel fitted with chokes.  It served me well for several years.  Good Luck on your quest.  2520

2520 thanks for the reply  !!  I am definetely hearing and seeing the firing pin as sometimes I have to press the lever 3 or 4 times to the right to keep it bask otherwise I cannot close the gun after loading it. In fact the ejector will hit the firing pin keeping me from closing the gun. Thank again!!!!!

Email sent; I've got a 219 with a 30/30 and a 16ga. I'm a TC man, and have been holding on to it until my son was bigger, but he's liking the TCs too.
