first call today
« on: January 17, 2005, 05:13:51 PM »
It was 11 degrees in Ohio at 3:30 pm this afternoon.I had had enough of this cabin fever and since my grandson Troy was with me today because of no school.I decided to take him on his first varmint hunt actually his first hunt he's only 6 here's what happened.I live in the sticks thank God and the sun was out today and I had bad cabin fever. My grandson brought his Carharts and Cabela's red parka and we struggled to get his boots on fired up the Ranger and cruised to the neighbors woods.
While we walked quietly sticking close to the pines I  showed him the various tracks in the hard sandy snow.He was packin his shiney new Red Ryder that I got him for CHRISTmas and did a great job of keeping the barrel upwind of both of us.We got to my deer feeder and it was empty, scrapes were new as I looked around.I have a portable deer blind further in the woods and we went to that and unzipped it and got in.Damn it was cold but this kid was hunting.
A rabbit vaulted in front of us and hit the snow every 10 feet til out of sight.Troy said he'd be ready for the next one with a little whisper.Once in the blind I pulled out my new Cass River caller and let him stick it out the portal of the blind and press the button. His eyes got big as the rabbit squalled and I wondered what trauma they used to get that rabbit to sing like that.
We gestured at each other and waited I had whispered to him to watch his side and I'll watch mine. After a time we repeated the squeal and waited and while we waited we both wiped the snot on our sleeves and recalled gramma Barb's advice to remember the kleenex. We should listen to her more often. He asked about bears and what would get him in the woods and I assured him he was safe ,wasn't he with the best hunter/tracker in the Buckeye state.
Well we squeaked and squalled tell the cold reminded of us that our flesh was aching and zipped up the blind and headed for home.
I told him to take a different path and I would meet him at the end of the woods.I walked a few paces then heard a noise close behind me it was him the hunter cryin quietly and saying "grampa I can't to that" he was afraid,I decided we could make the journey together he immediatly perked up and started walkin and stalkin.
Almost  out of the woods backtracking our entry tracks ther e were two sets of fresh round ones. One a mature coyote and the other a fox.Our blind had worked the call did it's job and we hurried home and I had a hot coffee his dad picked him up and I realized that was one of my best hunting trips ever.

take a kid hunting,

Lizzzard,

You can bet that will stick with the boy for the rest of his life,, Grand pa's too. I started my boy when he was six years old, we were running about 150 traps and out all day and then at night we would skin critters. He turned into a heck of a hunter and trapper and thanks me every time we get togather, Now he takes his boys out when he is in the woods.
Congratulations MR Lizzzard for giving a young man a look at the real world. Best of luck to ya.........Joe.........
