Scope Question On Buffalo Classic
« on: January 09, 2005, 12:29:47 PM »
I noticed on my Buffalo Classic there is a screw about an inch or in front of the rear sight. With two screws holding the receiver sight, does this mean removing the rear sight will allow a scope to be mounted ? I really hadn't thought about this rifle being set up with a scope, now I curious.

The BC barrel will accept the scope base just as any other NEF rifle barrel.  Some use them most do not, but do what suits you best.

My suggestion is to keep it small so as not to look too out of place.

handirifle,
You answered my question, I thought maybe it would accept a scope base. It's my very humble opinion that a scope would tend to look out of place on this rifle as it would take away from what , I suppose, a Buffalo rifle should look like.

I saw a 30-40 Kraig that John Scoffstall carried on his hunt into Scotland.  John just happens to be the owner of C. Sharps in Big Timber, Mt. and the 30-40 Kraig was a C. Sharps 1874 design but Scottland required a certain FPS and optics on any rifle used for hunting.

Did it look funny to see the ol Lyman Alaskin 7/8" dia scope on his C. Sharps... you bet.

Now if one wants period correctness you can put a cheap brass telescopic sight that is 18 1/2" long that is available through Dixie Gun Works then type in Brass Telescopic Sight.  It is ment for an octagon barrel but can me mounted and fitted to a round barrel.

But anyway, there is another member on the forum that has his scoped because of his eyes and needing a scope to see the target with.  I say why not... at least he can shoot it still instead of leaving it in the closet or gun safe.  I have a pic of it and it really is not that bad.

Do what ya want and have fun shooting it.

The Montanan,

I hope no one thought I was being critical of anyone scoping a rifle like that, instead when I saw the extra screw it made me wonder if H&R had drilled & tapped these rifles for a scope base. Which is OK with me if that's what you want, but for me personally I wouldn't do it. At almost 50 years old I need scopes or receiver sights in order to shoot accurately. I have receiver sights on all my lever guns and I like the one on this one.I shot it Saturday did fine with it.

And like you say if scoping that dude gets someone out shooting it, more power to them.

Next on my agenda is ordering dies, bullets, brass & powder for this rifle so any suggestions are welcome. Anyone try Triple 7 powder in one of these instead of black powder, will it work?

I'm no BP expert by ANY means but 777 should work just fine.  Make sure you use the same VOLUME as you would any other BP, not the same WEIGHT.  777 is less dense then BP and a charge of 60gr (by weight) of Swiss fffg, for example, will have less power than 60gr (by weight) of 777.
