is it safe to drill and tapp a receiver on a m38 Turk or m48

Sure why not! I have not heard of any problems with the strengh of these recievers and drilling and tapping one should not hurt it any. On a collector forum you would get do not do it of course they do not want you to alter any rifle. My thoughts are I bought it to shoot so if I can make it more user friendly I am going to. Jim

Sure, no problem with strength.  Depending on the scope bases, though - sometimes it's good to have the clip-guide ground down flush for clearence - just an extra little expense.
M48's generally have little or no "historical provenence" - excellent sporter material!  
The only hitch with the Turks is that rebarreling can be interesting - some used "Small ring" style barrels in the Large-ring action - be sure what the thread diameter and pitch are before buying a new barrel!
The longer Turk action would work better with the longer calibers too, like .30-06 or .270.

The m38 Turks are virtually all going to be threaded for the small ring barrels (though they can take any of the high pressure rounds that a regular 98 can).  If buying pre-made barrels then MidwayUSA has Adams & Bennet small-ring barrels in 6.5x55, 7x57, and .257 Roberts, all of which should work fine (and if you have a C&R then with dealer discount those barrels are only $87).   Many of the custom barrel makers will be cutting the threads as you order them anyways so if you order from them it's not a problem.

The m48 takes a standard thread size barrel, but the receiver is slightly shorter.  As such many of the parts don't interchange with a standard 98.

If you don't plan on rebarreling though, then you'll just drill/tap and have the bolt handle forged.  Make sure that you can your own bolt forged rather than buying a new one or you will likely run into headspace issues.

I was going to change the caliber on my 98k project mauser but i decieded to stay with the 8mm mainly because of cheap surplus and new ammo thats around(no reloading required).  I did drill and tap the reciever for the higher see thru mounts from samco global arms which worked out ok by just bending the orginal straight bolt.  I purchased a 3 post military type scope from CDNN investments its a  Ultralux 6x42 3 post for $29.95.  I really didn't expect to get much for $29.95 but it seems to be a heavy quality scope for that cheap price.  I can't afford to put the higher priced scopes on everything so the cheaper ones will do for the plinkers.                                                           BigBill

If anyone decides to go with the Advanced Technologies Mauser bolk kit it works well and is not hard to fit to the bolt BUT keep in mind they are made for the AT stock system they use and the scope sits higher on these stocks than a if put on a reciever so if you do use this bolt kit you have to get high based rings for the bolt kit to work. They do make them I found some Weaver style that were high or the see through ones would work as well. Jim

I put a williams peep on my 48A with a front fire sight works great but you have to remove the rear sight. I took off the whole sight band & semi sporterized the stock & bedded the action. Thinking of adding a timny trigger Chop Chop :grin:

BigBill, I have that same scope on my CETME, and it seems to have no problem handling the recoil of that rifle.  Of course, it don't kick as much as a Mauser does.

Hey, he's in SC (I guess you are too  ).  I wonder what his rates are.  My next project is already setup to go to my local smith, but I might keep this guy in mind for the future.
