I want a long range shooter...........
« on: January 08, 2005, 02:39:18 PM »
Looking for a long range shooter with mild recoil. I might be able to pick up a couple of crop damage permits this summer and want to get a rifle that will reach out to about 250 yards and take a deer cleanly. I am considering a 243 , 25-06 or 7mm-08 and would reload myself. I'm 63 and prefer something with a somewhat mild recoil taking a shot at that distance. I have never fired any of those rifles. The only shoulder guns I have shot in the past few years are a 223, 50 cal BP and 12 ga shotgun .
Any advice would be appreciated. Gander Mt can order either calibre at a decent price in NEF . The 243 and 7mm-08 have 20" barrels whereas the 25-06 has a 26" barrel .

All three will do what you want, but 25-06 and 7-08 are tied for first with the 243 being OK but not as powerful as the other two.  I can't say which of first two kick the least (I have only shot 25-06 twice) but both ar not known to be big hitters. Maybe the deciding factor could be the size, the 7-08 is shorter making a little better of a truck gun.  When you are splitting hairs you have to look for something.

I think you've already made some good choices, but I'd lean towards the 7mm-08. If your reloading, I'd also recommend you try some Barnes XBT, or Triple Shock bullets.

The 7mm is a reloaders dream.  There are so many 7mm bullets available for the reloader.

Yes, you could mention the .308, but only if you consider 600-1,000 yards long range....<><.... :-D

Nothing against the 7/08 but recoil can be an issue with this caliber.

I would suggest the 25-06. It has light recoil and will maintain 1000 ft/lbs of energy at 500 yards. This is plenty out to 250y. I shot a group a hair over 2 inches at 325 yards with my 25-06 Ultra. 250y shots on milk jugs with water are too easy....heck so are Pepsi cans :) It is very flat shooting

Also the recoil of the 25 is light. I shoot groundhogs with mine during the summer and have no problem with the recoil.

Here's a recoil table for reference. Looks like they are pretty even in recoil for those bullet weights.

http://www.chuckhawks.com/recoil_table.htm

7mm-08 Rem. (140 at 2860) 8.0 rifle    12.6 lbs recoil

25-06 Rem. (120 at 3000)         8.0  "         12.5 "   "

Thanks for the link quick.

A 120g bullet however, at 3000fps, seems to me like close to a max load. A factory load with a 120g bullet is more like 2800-2850fps. This may have a little affect or it may have a big one.

Using Pointblank, my groundhog loads have 10.62 ft/lbs and my deer loads have 13.55 ft/lbs of recoil. This is using a 75g bullet at 3575fps and a 115g bullet at ~3000fps~.

~~~Hmmm, that seems odd...my 115 g loads have more recoil than the 120 g at the same velocity AND my gun weight is more than 8 pounds :? Figure that one. The only thing possible seems to be the powder weight. The load on that site must have been using 42.93 grains of powder to get such a recoil. I would like to know what powder was used to propell that bullet so fast yet have that kind of recoil.
Then again, I'm getting tired so ya know how that can go :-D
I would give the 25-06  the nod...out of a Handi of course...the recoil is very mild...a lot less than what I thought it would be...and they are very accurate with the right load...bump up the recoil a bit...and the 308 would be my choice...it's also a great long range load...
Thanks for the replies. I know I can order any one of those NEF rifles for $200 . I have a 4X12 scope I can mount on it. I believe most of the votes were for the 25-06. Gotta check Gander Mt and Biekirks of Rochester for brass.  :grin:
