Poundage ?
« on: September 24, 2004, 08:22:24 PM »
Any suggestions on poundage on a recurve for hunting? I've been shooting a 55# lately with no problem. Is 55-60# addiqete for deer? Any info would be appreciated.

Most states have a minimum poundage requirement for hunting bows. Michigan, I believe, is 45 pounds, for example. I know of a lady who succesfully got her buck with a well tuned 35 pound youth compound, but with my shooting that would be really risky to say the least. Fred Bear Archery used to make a great 50 pound recurve for hunting and it was THE hunting bow for dechades.

You would have no problems at this poundage.  Something else that helps penetration is using a cut on contact broadhead.

yeah.  dont go too heavy (poundage).  accuracy is more important.   if you are shooting that weight and hitting well, i would say stick with it.   use heavier arrows if hunting animals that require more penatration.   light and fast shoots flatter,  but penatration suffers.   go heavy (with arrows) if your target quarry is bigger than whitetails.

What they said.  Your poundage is more than sufficient. Make sure your arrows are properly spined and fly well, and as stated above REAL sharp broadheads are a must. After that, in the end, the shot placement will be the key. Better able to send the arrow to the spot out of a 45# bow, then to place a poor shot with a 60# bow.

Back in the late 60's early 70's I was shooting a lot of field tourneys. I would use a 45# recurve for this as were most of my competition. I would listen to those guys talk about putting their tourney bows up and going way up in poundage come deer season. They said heavy bows were needed to hunt deer. I never understood this since both my Dad and I would take our 45# bows and go hunting. Never had a problem with penetration. A good cut on contact broadhead adds greatly to penetration. just my 2 cents.
